Year 9 My Career Insights – Morrisby Online Program

Year 9 students were sent some information regarding the Morrisby Online program.  Students complete a series of aptitude based assessments in Verbal, Numerical, Abstract, Spatial and Mechanical through the Morrisby Online program.  This forms My Career Insights which is part of the Year 9 career planning process for young people.  Recognising the importance of learning, career planning skills over time and understanding their individual strengths and preferences.

The Morrisby program is designed to assist students:

  • make informed choices about subject selection, VET - vocational education & training, appropriate
senior secondary school certificates to achieve educational success and further study options
  • Learn about the skills and abilities they can bring to a job
  • Find out what jobs match their abilities, interests & personality
  • The subjects required to meet the needs of these jobs

To date 83 Year 9 students have completed the online questions which is a fantastic effort!  A further 36 students have activated their account or are in the process of completing the activities.   We encourage these students to log back in and finish these tasks over the break. 131 students have not started Morrisby and are encouraged to complete this process over the school holidays in preparation for interviews in Term 3 & 4.  All students must return the Morrisby parental consent form in the Year 9 Team > Pathways > files.

Once the whole Year 9 cohort has completed the assessments & quizzes the portfolios will be sent to the printer in preparation for the individual counselling session occurring in Term 3 & 4.  This session will be conducted by a Morrisby trained Careers Practitioners who will unpack and explain the report including possible jobs that match students abilities, interests and personality.  Parents are welcome to attend this session.

Year 10 Careers Fast Track 3rd Stage – 1:1 Counselling

The final stage of CFT is progressing very well with counselling returning to face to face delivery with very good student participation.  Some fantastic conversations have been occurring with Rob unpacking students  ‘Personal Learning and Career Pathway Plan’, personality profile and how this impacts decisions and the world around us, student aspirations, preferred careers and the subjects required to complete in VCE in preparation for tertiary studies, apprenticeship, traineeship or work.    Students that had their counselling session via Teams whilst in remote learning 4.0 are welcome to collect their Personal Learning and Career Pathways Portfolio from Pathways.

Currently there are 63 Year 10 students yet to start/complete the career quizzes.  Please check with your young person to see if they have completed stage 1 – the quizzes. Reminder emails will be sent to these students and their parents/carers to start/finish this process.  Only students that have completed the CFT quizzes which produces the Personal Learning and Career Pathway Plan can only attend this very beneficial career interview.

The CFT program is very different from the Year 9 Morrisby program measuring aptitude.  The CFT program focuses on individual personality, values, learning styles, preferences to further study, career and work.  Both the Year 9 and Year 10 career programs complement each other.

Barista Training Sessions Update

Barista training will return to VSC in Term 3. There are 4 sessions to be delivered to enthusiastic Barista students keen to fire up the coffee machines and create volumes of coffee to appreciative staff and some lucky senior students.  Students enrolled in these remaining sessions will be messaged when the RTO provides confirmation of trainer availability and key dates to roll out the sessions.

Defence Force Work Experience Program

The Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP) will recommence this year in Victoria.  Work experience options at various bases throughout the year for Army, Air Force and Navy, starting from late March 2021.  For more information please visit www.defence.gov.au/workexperience

The following Air Force placement dates at RAAF East Sale are confirmed and appear on the website:

  • 13-14 September
  • 15-16 September

The Defence Force will email the students and the school if their application has been successful!

All DWEP placements will be conducted in accordance with our COVID Safe plan and are subject to relevant State/Territory COVID-19 Guidelines and Defence Restrictions.  Please be aware that this may result in a placement being changed, postponed and/or cancelled at short notice.

Work Experience

Work experience participation is optional at VSC, however we strongly encourage all students aged 15yrs+ to get involved in this very beneficial and rewarding program.  Students can undertake Work Experience every year until they graduate VSC.

Work experience provides young people with a taste of the real world of work and a clearer understanding of a particular industry, field or business they may be interested in pursuing in the future.  Work experience assists in career discovery and exploration, goal setting and decision making whilst preparing students for VCE or VCAL, future tertiary studies, apprenticeship/traineeships or full time work.

There are no designated time frames for students to complete placements as we believe a flexible delivery arrangement provides students with a better opportunity to meet the availability and operational time frames of businesses and industries within the community. This also means we are not competing with other local schools which can limit student’s placement opportunities.

Placement dates are arranged through consultation and negotiation between the employer, school and student to maximise the experience.  However, if your young person is not going on the Central Australia to Darwin trip, they may want to consider the last week of Term 3 as the perfect opportunity to undertake work experience.

Career Development is the lifelong process of managing life, learning and work (paid and unpaid) over our lifespan.  The ability to make informed decisions, manage and transition through change for a personally determined future.

Young people build their career development through self-awareness; understanding how they make decisions and how these decisions impact future aspirations through exploration, identifying interests, values and preferred learning styles through careers exploration activities such as Morrisby in Year 9 and Careers Fast Track in Year 10.  The ability to research a wide range of career options helping them to select subjects they may enjoy learning whilst aligning to tertiary course pre-requisite requirements in the future or apprenticeship/traineeship requirements and work.

Career development is further enhanced by juggling the expectations and requirements of school with extra-curricular activities, sport and family responsibilities, part-time work, community involvement and social interests.

To further assist your Career Development please visit vscpathways.com an easy to use interface with links to a multitude of career resources for both Students and Parents.  We encourage all VSC students and their families to explore the Pathways website to assist in making informed decisions about their future.
