Grade Five

With the end of Term 2 almost upon us, we reflect on the term that was!

Our Week 7 and 8 Remote Learning journey showed the ability of our students to adapt to the changes in their learning in a manner that they should be extremely proud of. It was wonderful to be able to connect with our students through our Morning WebEx Meetings during Week 8; it was better still to come back to school and resume our face to face learning.

The Parent-Teacher Meetings held this week allowed our students the opportunity to reflect on their first semester in Grade 5 and share the successes and challenges they faced. Reflection and goal setting are important components of personal development and as such, our students have set themselves areas of their learning to focus on next semester. We look forward to working closely with our students in order for them to achieve the goals they have set themselves.

Our students continued to work very hard throughout both our English and Maths sessions this term. The SMART Spelling process continued to allow our students to understand how words work, while writing focused on information reports. Students focused on researching quality websites and summarising information to include in their report. The use of mentor texts allowed for modelling and scaffolding how an information report is written. The use of a Lotus diagram enabled students to plan efficiently for their writing.

During Maths, our focus on transformations and symmetry enabled our students to look for these in real life examples [eg. logos] and then create their own patterns. Key words and consistency in the language used in Maths continues to allow students to make connections across the maths curriculum. Quick Maths questions at the start of our Maths sessions allows our students to reinforce their understanding and application of the four operations; questions are differentiated to enable students to work at their level, while also challenging their skills. Our students have been enthusiastic in their use of Prodigy to practice their Maths, providing opportunities for continued reinforcement of their understanding of mathematics.

Specialist classes [Art, Italian, Phys Ed. and Technology] continue to expose our students to areas within the curriculum that ensure their learning is diverse and meaningful. As a Team, we remain forever grateful for the learning opportunities our students are afforded through their Specialist subjects and the encouraging, inclusive programs they are a part of. The Grade 5 Extended Cooking Program has been thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part in it; thank-you to Rose and Miss Morgan who have upskilled and challenged our students, while ensuring fun was had too!

We remain greatly appreciative of the support you continue to give to your children and our school; we can’t wait for the adventures that Term 3 will bring!
