Year 6 Report
This term our students will be focusing on the geographical world as part of the Humanities and Geography unit of work. They will be required to investigate a range of natural disasters on a global scale, paying attention to the impact such disasters have on migration patterns and the landscape. As the Reading component of this inquiry the students will be exposed to a number of information texts on the relevant topic and will focus on the various ways an information report can be presented. They will be required to identify the purpose of the information text and explore the various structures and features of these texts. The students will continue to use ‘Just Right’ books and will work on their individual reading goals to develop their comprehension.
In Writing, the students will use the knowledge gained from their research to present their chosen natural disaster in the form of an information text following a negotiated format. Once they have completed their report, they will create a narrative incorporating natural disaster facts into their story. Both the information report and narrative will be published online as an eBook. Again, the students will be using personal writing goals to revise, edit and improve their work.
In Speaking and Listening, the students will continue to develop oral language skills through share time, the giving of opinions related to current affairs topics, and presenting written work. This includes presenting work on our natural disaster unit and explaining strategies and reasoning for their choices in Maths.
During Mathematics lessons, our students will be learning how to make connections between fractions, decimals and percentages. They will then use this knowledge to be able to express the probability of real life events occurring. Our students will look at how to express measurements in different ways (for example in millimetres, centimetres and meters), and how decimals are involved in this process. Students will also strengthen their knowledge of multiplication and division concepts and mental strategies, which will lead to them being able to better understand the equations involved.
Attendance continues to be a priority this term. Please remember that if you have any concerns, we are only a phone call away. We look forward to continuing to develop positive relationships with your children.
