Term 3

Welcome to Term 3! We have a lot of exciting learning experiences coming up this term for our Grade 5 students including a Team Building incursion, Book Week and Science Week. This Term we also have a variety of sport activities and events where students and teams will be involved in District events, Gala days as well as Intra School Sport.

The Grade 5 team are looking forward to a great term of learning! 📝

Literacy and Inquiry

This term our Literacy and Inquiry unit will be very closely linked as we explore Australia's History.

Grade 5 students are becoming historians, reading a variety of historical texts about Australia's History from 1788 - 1901. We will be reading and viewing historical recounts from and about key figures such as, Captain Arthur Phillip, Bennelong, various convicts, free settlers, explorers, sailors and bush rangers. We will be investigating the impact of European settlers and explorers on Indigenous Australians. Students will have the opportunity to develop their own wonderings and carry out investigations on their particular topic of interest. In Writing, Grade 5 students will be applying their new knowledge of historical recounts to write their own historical recount on a key period of history. These pieces will be published and presented to the school community at the Writer's Festival in Term 4. Mr Ly, Miss Bianca and Ms Lisa are all excited and looking forward to discovering Australia's History together.

Mathematics

Term 3 is all about multiplication and division. We will be playing lots of games to develop our speed and accuracy with multiplication tables. We will be exploring a range of new strategies to help us improve our mental maths. We will investigate the link between multiplication and division and this will help our speed and accuracy with division facts. As part of our multiplication and division unit, we will be making links to 2D and 3D shapes using formulas to discover their area and volume.

The Olympic Games will be a great resource to explore and consolidate a variety of mathematical topics. For example, time, decimals, percentages, length and height.

It's going to be fun! Go Australia! 🦘
