Year 2 Report
Welcome to Term 3!
Welcome back everyone! Unfortunately, once again this newsletter greets you in the comfort of your own homes, as we are back in lockdown! We have of course, done this before and each time we get better and better at it! So many thanks to the students and the families for trying their best and putting a tremendous effort into their studies outside of the class during this tough time. We will get through this! This term there is lots to look forward to. The Grade 2 Sleepover will be going ahead in September! Parents, please make sure to keep an eye out for the permission forms that will be sent home soon after we are back to school. Read on to see the fantastic learning that the Grade 2's will be doing in Term 3.
During Term 3 our students will be focusing on developing their multiplication and division skills. Initially, students will revise skip counting and experiment with concrete materials (e.g., counters and unifix) to practice sharing and creating equal groups. Then we will move onto the different strategies they can use to assist them such as repeated addition, arrays and modelled story problems.
Our Math's lessons continue to aim to engage the students learning of concepts and skills through games, hands on activities and technology. There are opportunities for students to participate in whole group and partner work as well as focused small groups.
We continue to emphasize the importance of problem solving and reasoning by encouraging lots of discussions about alternative solutions and strategies used. As always, it is very important that the skills we teach in the classroom are continued at home. Activities such as sharing common household items (e.g., dry pasta, beads, pencils) into equal groups and creating matching multiplication and division sentences, or even practicing skip counting on the way home from school can further support your child in achieving their academic potential.
After our Addition and Subtraction topic, we had the last two weeks of Term 2 to focus on Length and Mass. The kids had a ball experimenting with informal units to explore measurement. Below are some photos of the students experimenting with scales and some common classroom objects!
During Term 3 in English, students will be exploring the text structure and language features of recount texts. Students will develop an understanding of the structure and organisation of a recount text and will create their own recount text including a title, orientation, sequence of events in order and an ending. Students will be encouraged to write a personal recount using the correct language features, writing in first person and including past tense verbs and descriptive language.
Please continue to support your child's literacy skill development by reading to or with them each day or by providing them with access to books and audio books to further develop their accuracy and fluency.
Our Inquiry topic this term is Australia Then and Now.
Throughout the term the students will aim to identify the range of groups to which they, their family members and their class belong. They will learn about their history and of their family. There will be a major focus on communities and developing the students understanding of the different groups and families that belong to their local community. The students will need to explain why groups and communities have rules and understand how people participate in their community. We aim to help them understand their place in the community.
