In the Classrooms

In the classroom the children have been working very hard on producing quality writing. All the students have been writing short stories on a variety of topics . They have produced 4 short stories over the past 4 weeks , Each story has a a structural focus for example including the  ' 5 W' Where, What, why, when and who.  Creating five different introductory sentences using Dialogue, sound, asking a question or using an exciting verb is another way the children have started one of their stories.

The children are hoping to create an online book with at least one example from all the students.

A couple of the examples of what may be in the book are;

My Cat ate my tea

Bang! The oven door slams shut.

On Friday my cat Smokey sits looking at the oven watching the mesmerising food turn golden brown.

“Beep beep” goes the oven. Licking my lips I ran to get the delicious golden meat out of the oven.

Smokey watches very carefully to grab any food that falls off the spoon as I bang the meat on my plate.

Knock, knock! “Ahhhhhhhh I want to eat my food!”I say under my breath.

I go and answer the door “Hi Sam what are you here for?”

“Your cows are out.” said Sam.

As Sam leaves I turn around and say “Bye Smokey we have to get the cows back in the paddock.”

While I was getting the cows back in the paddock Smokey,  gobbled my meatloaf on the couch, then vomited on the new carpet.

He went back into the kitchen and jumped on the stove top.

Ate the rest of my meatloaf, then fell asleep on the stove top.

While getting the cows back in all I could think about was my meatloaf waiting for me to get home.

When I got home to eat dinner I opened the door and saw the mess he had made.

I felt angry and did not feed him for two whole weeks.

The Magical Mystery

Where is my phone”? Said Bella. She looked around the house. “It isn’t here” she said alarmed. Then she said “I will go to see if it is at my friends house”. So she started to walk down the street to her friends house. She gets to the front door and says, "can I come in ? "I need to find my phone I think I left it here last night". The door opens and Rachel steps out. "Ok" she says come in. So Bella went inside and looked around but it wasn’t there. So she set off home with no phone to be found. She opens the door to see the phone sitting on the bench. "My phone!!!" she yelled "how did it get there?"

During the maths sessions the children are working on their number skills especially place value with whole numbers, some of the older children are working with decimal numbers. Learning how to add and subtract decimals is turning out to be not as difficult as they thought! Over the next few weeks the children will also be working on developing their skills and knowledge about Time - reading time,  working out timetables, and elapsed time.

It is great to see the home reading continue to happen- we are already nearly up for that 'class party' - combined total of 425 nights for the school. In reading sessions apart from decoding, word study and word recognition the children are developing their inference skills - the ability to work out what the author is inferring in their writing rather than explicitly stated.
