History Enrichment Program HEP – Highlights Exhibition Day

On Friday 25 October, students and teachers from a number of schools joined representatives from the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria and Federation University for a presentation of student work as part of the History Enrichment Program (HEP). There was a great attendance creating a buzz of excitement as the History Enrichment program culminated with the HEP Highlights Exhibition with four Aitken College students awarded Certificates of Completion during an official ceremony at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. The HEP was an opportunity to showcase the skills and abilities of students who have a passion in the subject area of history. Students were required to participate in a workshop day, decide on their historical period to research, complete their ‘passion project’ and attend the exhibition to discuss their project and answer any questions about their choice of theme. Our students presented their history passion projects as exhibitors, exploring periods ranging from the Stone Age, Ancient History Medieval and Middle Ages, and Modern History. They each did an outstanding job, showcasing an in-depth knowledge of their subject areas and applying their critical thinking skills. We are very proud of their Passion Projects and they too should feel very proud of their achievements.

Student reflections:

The HEP Exposition was a fascinating experience. I have learnt a lot from my peers and the history topics that they were interested in. My topic was about the history of Poland, looking back to its very beginning. A lot of people were interested in my topic, especially with a game I made ‘Spot the White Eagle’. This challenged a lot of people to a quick game of trying to spot Poland’s emblem while learning about the history of the country. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would love to do it again!

Last term I was lucky enough to be chosen for the HTAV History Enrichment Program along with five other primary students. I learnt so much during the program and it was really fun presenting my passion project and listening to the other students as they presented theirs. I did my passion project on the history of music and learnt about the different periods of music. Did you know that the harp was invented between 500 AD and mid-fifteenth century? I learnt that whilst doing my project, cool, right? Overall, I loved this experience and I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of it.
