  • Apply for a related TAFE course if you have not done so already
  • Apply for a course at Monash College or Deakin College (see VTAC Guide)
  • Complete a Diploma in Tertiary or Foundation Studies – e.g. at Monash University, RMIT and Victoria University

Accessing VCE Results

VCE study scores, ATAR and VTAC Scaled Study Scores will be available to students via the Results and ATAR website and the Results and ATAR app in December - https://resultsandatar.vic.edu.au/results/applicants.htm.  Students will receive a statement of VCE study scores from the VCAA, and those who applied for courses through VTAC this year and have paid their VTAC processing fees will be sent an ATAR statement in the mail.

Students who wish to receive their results online, will need to register at https://resultsandatar.vic.edu.au/results/applicants.htm before results are released.

Registrations are already open, and students are encouraged to register soon.

To register, students need their VCAA student number and will be requested to choose a secure password on registering.

Low Income Healthcare Card for Australian Students

Once you have finished school you are no longer a student and you may be eligible for a Low Income Health Care Card.

This card gives access to a range of concessions, not only on some health care items and possible concession fares on Victorian public transport services, but also on a range of other goods and services if you are on a low income.

In particular, some TAFE and other short courses offer discounts for cardholders.

You may also be eligible for public transport concessions (note that if you are studying interstate you are not eligible for public transport concessions in Victoria).

Eligibility for a Low Income Health Care Card is based on YOUR income over the previous 8 weeks. As long as your income is less than $4488 over that period (or $561 per week) you should qualify. You will maintain the Low Income Health Care Card as long as your income does not exceed $5,610.00 (or $701.25 per week) in any 8 week period.

It is highly recommended that all graduating Year 12 students consider applying for this card once the exams are over.

Visit Low Income Healthcare Card and find out more - https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/low-income-health-care-card

Tax File Number

Year 12 students are reminded yet again that they cannot enrol in a CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) university course next year without a Tax File Number (TFN).  Students who do not have one are reminded to apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.

To apply and also to find out about participating Post Offices, visit TFN Application

Study Assist

Students are encouraged to browse the following link as the website provides information to students about Australian Government assistance for financing of tertiary study.  There is very useful information on study loans, how one pays back those loans, scholarship opportunities, etc.  A useful PDF titled Beyond School Study Guide published in September last year can also be found at - Beyond School Study Guide

Free TAFE

Do you fit into any of the below categories?

  • You’re not sure of your career direction but you would like to qualify in a particular industry.
  • You would like to have a backup career plan if you don’t receive your most desired university course offer.
  • You would like to create a pathway to enable you to work while you undertake further study at a later date.
  • You’re not really interested in studying at university but want to study.

If any of the above relate to you, then it is definitely worth looking at the ‘Free TAFE’ courses list: (https://w.www.vic.gov.au/freetafe/free-tafe.html).

Free TAFE Courses cover tuition fees for priority courses for students who are eligible for government-subsidised training. This includes; 40 priority non-apprenticeship courses and 20 Victorian apprenticeship pathway courses (sometimes called pre apprenticeships). Free TAFE courses lead to occupations in industries where there are likely to be more jobs. So be sure to take a look at what is available to you!

 2019 Australian Jobs

In 2019, the Australian labour market is markedly different from that experienced by workers in past decades.

The Australian Jobs publication presents an overview of the current labour market and highlights the major changes which have occurred, including for industries and occupations. The report is based largely on Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures but also uses data from other Government and related agencies. More detailed information is available and Australian Jobs includes links to help you explore the labour market further.

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Speech PathologyACU understands that the change to the prerequisites for the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology in Victoria has caused confusion and concern.

In 2017, we removed Physical Education and Health and Human Development for occupational therapy, and Physical Education for speech pathology as subjects providing a suitable basis of knowledge for these courses. The changes were listed in the Year 10 course guide issued by VTAC in 2017 (as well as 2018 and 2019) to assist students in choosing units of study for years 11 and 12 to meet entry requirements for their chosen university courses. They were also correctly advertised on the VTAC future entry requirements page from July 2017 to July 2019.

Regardless, we understand that some applicants used other ACU documents likes handbooks or the 2019 Course Browser to guide their school subject choices in years 11 and 12 in 2018 and 2019, which left some students ineligible to enter their chosen course.

To ensure the most equitable approach to all applicants for entry to the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy or Bachelor of Speech Pathology in 2020 and 2021, we will review on a case-by-case basis, the eligibility of applicants who feel they have been disadvantaged.

Such applicants will be required to meet the ATAR requirements, as well as the English pre-requisites for entry, in the normal way, but will be assessed using the science subject pre-requisites used for 2019 (that is, including Physical Education and Health and Human Development for occupational therapy, and Physical Education for speech pathology). To start this process, students who feel they have been disadvantaged should send their name, date of birth and VTAC ID to either ACU’s Future Students contact, or to AskACU. Once offer rounds commence in Victoria, ACU Admissions will individually check the eligibility of the applicants if occupational therapy and or speech pathology at ACU is their first preference.

Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Science Bridging

What options do students have if they don’t meet the maths or chemistry VCE prerequisites to get into pharmacy or pharmaceutical science?

Mathematical Methods VCE prerequisite

  • Applicants could study maths higher level units over their first year in a tertiary course.  They can then apply to transfer into pharmacy or pharmaceutical science if they have achieved a minimum 70% average in the first year of the tertiary degree.  Please note that credit is not currently given for transfers into pharmacy.
  • The Open Universities Australia offers math units that may prove acceptable.  Students are encouraged to visit Open Universities directly for advice.
  • Overall, the maths must meet higher level maths equivalencies which applicants must investigate, and faculty course advisers should be able to assist here.

Chemistry VCE prerequisite

  • For students who have not met the chemistry prerequisite, Monash recommends they study two VCE equivalent chemistry units over their first year in a tertiary course to be considered as meeting the prerequisite.  They can then apply to transfer into pharmacy or pharmaceutical science.  They would also have to achieve a minimum 70% average in the first year of the tertiary degree.  Please note that credit is not currently given for transfers into pharmacy.

In summary, students really wanting to study pharmacy or pharmaceutical science at Monash University but do not meet the maths or chemistry VCE prerequisites, are encouraged to enrol in a tertiary course that gives them access to higher levels of maths and/or chemistry, with the aim of transferring across after one year.  Students can also consider Graduate Entry Pharmacy (3 years) after completion of a Biomedical, Science or Pharmaceutical Science undergraduate degree.

Hairdressers cut, style, colour, straighten and blowave hair and provide clients with hair and scalp treatments. In most salons, the senior hairdressers and the more advanced apprentices cut and style hair. Apprentice hairdressers undertake routine tasks in the initial stages of employment, assisting senior hairdressers with preparing clients, shampooing, applying and removing simple hairdressing treatments, and sterilising and maintaining equipment. As apprentices gain experience, they carry out more complex tasks under supervision.

Hairdressers:

  • Talk to clients about their requirements
  • cut hair using clippers, scissors or razors
  • shampoo, condition and rinse hair
  • provide services such as colouring, bleaching, applying treatment, permanent waving (with chemical solutions), straightening and tinting
  • dry hair and style it using brushes, combs, straightening irons and other equipment
  • shave and trim beards and moustaches
  • advise clients on hair care
  • block (shape), clean, colour adjust, curl and cut wigs and hairpieces
  • attend hairdressing seminars and training in order to keep up to date with new products and techniques
  • operate a cash register and computer
  • perform reception duties such as answering telephone calls and making appointments
  • sell retain products
  • maintain client records
  • clean the salon, work areas and equipment.

Hairdressers may be employed in women’s, men’s or unisex salons. They spend most of their day on their feet and are usually required to work staggered shifts to fit in with salon business hours. They have a high level of public contact, so they need to be well presented.

Personal requirements of a hairdresser:

  • No allergies to hair products
  • pleasant personality
  • good communication skills
  • able to work under pressure
  • good hand-eye coordination
  • patient
  • have creative flair
  • attention to detail
  • are able and willing to follow instructions.

Hairdressing

To become a hairdresser, you usually have to complete an apprenticeship. Entry requirements may vary, but employers usually require completion of Year 10. You can also become a hairdresser by completing a VET qualification. As subjects and prerequisites can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for more information.

Most hairdressers are employed in hairdressing salons, usually working with four to six people. Some work in large department stores. Hairdressers may also be employed as stylists for television, film, theatre or advertising agencies. Those with good retail skills (selling products or additional treatments) are particularly in demand. Many hairdressers, after a number of years working in the industry, set up their own businesses, enter into partnerships or teaching hairdressing.
