Bishop Joe Grech Scholarship
I was fortunate enough to be the 2019 recipient of the Bishop Joe Grech Scholarship where I was able to identify an opportunity I would undertake that would enhance my leadership skills or my spirituality. While conducting my research I came across a program called YLead. I decided to take this option with little knowledge of what it was going to be like or who would be there.
It was an amazing adventure where I got to meet many fellow leaders from schools all over the state (and from Tasmania). I don't have enough words to explain how great of an opportunity it was to participate in this national program. I was outside of my comfort zone and was able to make the most of the opportunity. We did so many activities that forced you to think beyond your initial instincts. We did one activity where you were with a partner and had to score as many points as possible. Everyone’s initial thought was to compete with your partner but really you had to work together in order to obtain the most points. It was things like this that made you think about the way you want to lead and how this could impact the school environment around you.
While there, we were split into groups to get to know each other and were matched up with a mentor. This mentor is there to keep in touch with you throughout the year and to help with any leadership or schooling dilemmas you may have throughout the year. Through multiple guest speakers and CEO of YLead herself in order to help us to learn about where this opportunity can lead you to.
This opportunity has developed the way I think towards different situations that have or could be presented to me this year. Overall I am very grateful that I received the scholarship and recommend that any future students takes the opportunity to apply.
