Kitchen Garden program

The focus for the Year 2 Kitchen Garden session this week was on strawberries and seeds. Our recipe was Strawberry Cupcakes - where in 3 groups, students worked cooperatively to follow the recipe. Whilst Mrs Cedro and Mrs Cristiano monitored the cakes baking in the oven the students turned their attention to seeds, harvesting the seeds from the strawberries which we will put aside to dry and use to plant when the weather is warmer.  Our other activity was sowing snow pea seeds into small pots, then placing them in a greenhouse hoping to notice germination in the weeks ahead. The year 2 students have taken over custody of two snow pea plants sitting outside their rooms. The students contributed to repotting them and providing support for growth in the way of wire trellis and a garden stake. They observed how the plant's tentacles actually reach out to the support structure and hang on and they grow upwards. The students will provide water, check the amount of sunshine and keep the chickens away as they watch the plants grow. We wrapped up our session devouring the delicious cupcakes which were completed with strawberry icing.

Year 4M had a kitchen garden session this week making pizza pinwheels using pastry as the base and adding pizza ingredients, including rocket from our garden bed,  then rolling the pastry and cutting wheels to make a delicious treat. In the garden the students planted the newly and generously donated native plants from Bunnings Scoresby in and around the front area of our school. We discussed how when a business donates to us, it would be the right thing to promote their business to our school community, so please consider a visit to Bunnings Scoresby and make sure you tell them how grateful you are for our school to benefit from their generosity.

Sustainability Leaders - Go Green Summit

Our Sustainability Team of Charleen, Julian, Tristan and Mason will participate in an online summit with participating schools hosted by Mazenod College. Students both secondary and primary, will showcase their school's efforts related to sustainable practices, and will share their concerns and discuss solutions to world environmental problems.  The summit is open all of next week and our students will represent our school at specific times during the week.
