Welcome to Term 3, I hope everyone is feeling rested and ready for a busy term ahead. I recently travelled to Bali and always enjoy getting out of the tourist areas to explore the traditional side of Bali. One of our favourite activities is mountain biking down from Kintamani (Mt Batur) to Ubud -some 40 km taking the back roads and tracks. Our journey usually takes us through a variety of rice paddies, rainforest tracks and traditional villages. I am always struck by how unchanged the villages and homes are, with most lacking the basics we take for granted - running water, reliable electricity, TV, internet, refrigeration, air conditioning. What impresses me is watching the children from these villages going to and from school (sometimes 3 on a motorbike) in their immaculate uniforms - smiling and happy.
It stops me to reflect and be grateful for the opportunities that we quite often take for granted. I know that I am extremely fortunate to be an Australian and live in such a lucky country. I am also aware that where I am today is thanks to the support, hard work and encouragement of many people over many years. The children heading to school happy and smiling reminds me to see the happiness and joy in everyday events and experience. Like being with friends and family, being able to take time off to enjoy travel, having good health to do physical activities.
I have challenged myself and my students for the remainder of the year to stop each day to reflect and be grateful for what we have and need and not concern ourselves with what we want or desire. I hope everyone has a great second semester and achieves all their goals, able to look back at a successful end of the year.
Kind Regards
