NAIDOC WEEK Celebrations

On Monday 26 June we began our NAIDOC Week celebrations with a special liturgy and flag raising ceremony followed by an extra special group of former students from the Aboriginal Mission School of Moree. Following its closure in 1971, the Aboriginal Mission School was acquired by the Catholic Parish. The building was renamed as the Wiradjuri building, and now serves as St. Philomena's Music room. The gathering brought back memories for the Elders as they walked through what was their old classrooms some 60 years ago.

Over the course of the week students across the school engaged in a variety of different activities - jewellery making, boomerang & dominoes painting and cultural dance lessons with Shae Duncan from Yulugi Marumali. Students thoroughly enjoyed participating in cultural dancing and learning the meaning of dance.

NAIDOC Touch Football Cup

Whilst we had a team of Primary Students attend Moree Public School, a group of Secondary Students attended Moree Secondary College to compete for a NAIDOC Cup in touch football. Unfortunately, Secondary didn't get the win but Primary Team A came away with the win. Students enjoyed attending the other schools and showcasing their abilities on the field.

Dhiiyaan Aboriginal Centre - Writing Competition

Moree Dhiiyaan Aboriginal Centre hosted a writing competition for students to state what an Elder is to them in 50 words on less. The competition was drawn in the school holidays at the Moree Shae Academy with Matilda Madden being awarded the winner.

" An Elder Is...Someone who you can go to for advice or for them to pull you back into line. To be an elder it means a lot because you have to set an example for future generations. All elders are nice and caring, they teach you about your past, present and future".
