Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony
On Tuesday, 11 July we had a whole school assembly. As part of the assembly, Eric Edwards and Jungala Ellis from the Bunurong Land Council joined us. Jungala led staff and students in a Welcome to Country and then invited students and staff to participate in a traditional smoking ceremony. Jungala explained that the ceremony is performed to cleanse and purify a person or place by driving away negative energy.
The leaves of three native Australian plants were burnt to create the smoke: the Manna Gum which represents women, Mother Earth and mothers; the Cherry Ballart representing “boorais” (children); and Black Wattle which represents men, warriors and protectors.
Students and staff walked respectfully through the smoke, quietly contemplating the land on which we are lucky enough to study and work upon.
The staff and students of Kambrya College extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Eric, Jungala and the Bunurong Land Council for allowing us the privilege to take part in these important traditional ceremonies.
