Auslan

I have continued to be very much impressed by the students attitude and willingness to learn Auslan. Our knowledge of signs is increasing. All classes will continue to work on carrying simple conversations where we greet others and sign about our day.

As a school this term we will be covering the topics: Fruit, Zoo Animals, How to ask Questions, Medical Signs, Clothes and About Me. Also we will focus on functional signs that will help us communicate throughout our day, such as “toilet please?”, “can I have?” and “where sit?”

F-2 students usually play games after we have our Auslan lesson to reinforce the signs we are learning. These include: copy me, match the sign to the card and sign freeze.

We also listen to read aloud stories with Auslan translation like “A visit to the Zoo by Jen Blyth and Jenny Taylor and listen to songs with Auslan signs related to our topic.

Grades 3-6 are practising not speaking when signing (which we’re finding a challenge) and using our facial expressions when we communicate in Auslan. Students in Grades 3-6 often revise past lessons using our school link from Aurora.

We are also looking at Auslan sentence structure and grammar and the difference between Auslan and English. E.g. English: I can see six green lizards. Auslan: I can see lizards, six, green.

Here are a couple of videos that Grade 3/4 made last term. Keep up the great work everyone!
