From the Desk of the Year 11 Manager

Tricia Radford

Our 2023 Year 11 cohort have now completed their first semester at SSSC. Over this time, we have witnessed the forging of friendships, the happiness of students who feel that they 'have found a school where I can be myself' and a commitment to embracing their Year 11VCE or VM program. It is wonderful for us in the Year 11 Management Team to see how well settled the students have become, and to be able to support them in making most of the opportunities offered here at Swinburne.

Term 3 has begun with its characteristic burst of activity. Academic achievements were acknowledged early on in the term with the presentation of Academic Excellence and Highly Commended awards in all subjects; photos of many of our smiling recipients can be seen on our Instagram page. Many students have also been able to extend their learning through excursions such as Year 11 Drama attending the musical, ‘Bloom’, the Theatre Studies class heading to St Kilda for a production of ‘Away’, Art Making and Exhibiting immersing themselves in the art exhibition ‘Nightshifts’ at Buxton Contemporary and the VM class participating in the citizenship and community program ‘From Colonial Outpost to Capital City’ at the Old Treasury Building.

As we move further into Term 3 it is important that students make sure they keep up to date with their coursework and any redemptions required for absences. The Year 11 studyperiods that many students are timetabled to attend are a wonderful opportunity to stay ontop of coursework and to seek support from the teachers and educational support staffavailable to them at that time. Any students at risk of compromising their Year 11 program due to attendance issues or falling behind with coursework are encouraged to talk with their Mentor and classroom teachers to develop a plan for the next couple of weeks.

Finally, we have come to the part of the year when Year 11 students need to be thinking about their subject choices for 2024. To support them with their selections there will be a Year 11 Subject Expo during Mentor next Thursday, 17th August. At the expo students will have the chance to seek advice from current Year 12 teachers about their choices alongside pathways advice before they submit their decisions.

We look forward to another enjoyable and successful term,

Warm Regards,

The Year 11 Management Team
