STEM4Innovation Breaking Barriers for Students

Kim Flintoff from Learning Futures Network sent out this news of the initiatives Stem4Innovation is getting on with:

We had a session with Professor Fiona Wood today organised in collaboration with the WA Innovation Hub and the iThink team – we were able to visit two operating theatres at Fiona Stanley Hospital and taken on a 1 hour personally guided tour by Fiona Wood.

Fiona set these challenges to the group:

What could we use instead of plastic bags for protection?

Currently, the major innovation in minimising the effects of aerosol contamination is the use of plastic bags to cover stuff – presenting many issues around time, efficacy, sustainability, etc –

Fiona invited the students (and those in 60 other schools we’ll introduce to the material next week) to identify possible solution pathways to better protection, disinfection and

containment within the world’s hospitals.

How can we work with burns victims more effectively?

Fiona also threw out a bonus challenge to design a table that would let her work more safely and effectively with burins victims to enable ready access to all sides of the body during surgery. A team of students were already sketching up ideas for that within minutes of the session finishing.

It was a great first step in what promises to be a long-term engagement process under our STEM4Innovation initiative – the reps from the WA Innovation Hub seemed very impressed by the student contact and the questions that were asked of Fiona.

The first presentation of potential solution proposals will be conducted in about 4-6 weeks from now.

Applications for the prestigious John Curtin Scholarship Program open on 2 July and close in September. Applications for all other Curtin scholarships open on 16 August. There is a range of scholarships available for students who have demonstrated academic merit and for students who are in financial need. Study Assist

The Study Assist website gives students an overview of what financial assistance they are eligible for when contemplating further education.

School leavers who go to uni because they don’t know what else to do can easily sign away their future by not considering the financial load they are taking on.

Some courses will cost $14,500 per year. For a 4-year course, they will pay $58,500. A decision to take on that sort of bill, at 18 can impact your whole life.
