Around The Primary
Dear Parents
The learning environment at John XXIII is vibrant and engaging. As I walk around the Primary school, I see students in a variety of capacities, including; working collaboratively in groups, engaging with their teachers in explicit instruction, working individually, reflecting through prayer, engaging in play-based activities, participating in sport games, singing, role-playing, engaging in language games in Japanese and using digital technology to learn about the world around them.
I have also had the pleasure to read some of the student’s work this week. The writing samples I have seen, from our youngest students, who are just coming to terms with the joy of writing a sentence, through to our older students writing different genres with imagination and excellent vocabulary, has been a source of delight. All our staff are to be commended for the way they identify and plan for various learning needs of our students.
We recognise the role of parents as the first educators of their children and are grateful to our parents for their interest and engagement with their children's progress at school. The partnerships that exist between school and home are vital to maintaining our thriving learning environment. The teachers are looking forward to meeting with parents at the Parent/Teacher meetings on Monday 20 July or Tuesday 21 July (booking details to follow).
I take you back to the words of Pope Francis, who has a great admiration for the work of teachers and parents.
‘Teaching is a beautiful job; as it allows you to see the growth day by day of people entrusted to your care. It is a little like being parents, at least spiritually. It is a great responsibility.’ (Pope Francis)
Kind regards,
Antoinette De Pinto

Comfy Day
Next Friday, 3 July is our annual ‘Comfy Day’ and the whole Primary community is invited to come to school dressed in warm comfy clothes or pyjamas.
On this day we hope to raise the students’ awareness of how fortunate we are to have access to everyday privileges. All students are asked to bring along a gold coin donation for LifeLink.
If you have a spare packet of tea bags or extra supply of coffee or Milo in your cupboard please send them along too, as these donations would be greatly appreciated by The Shopfront during these winter months.
Thank you for your generous support.
Build the Beat!
The Year 1 students have been learning to hear, read and clap rhythms using notation and the Kodály terms ta, ti-ti and za. They enjoyed using ‘beat blocks’ to work out the rhythms they heard.

Sports Update
Cross Country
The Year 3 to Year 6 Interhouse Cross Country Carnival will be taking place in Term 3 on Friday 31 July.
Morning training sessions have been a huge success with students building up their running fitness. If you would like to attend Thursday (Year 5 & 6) or Friday (Year 3 & 4) morning training sessions, please email steve.williams@cewa.edu.au as some spots have become available.
Students will have the opportunity to practice running the course in Week 10 of Term 2 and Week 1 of Term 3 at the morning training sessions and also in sport sessions in Week 1 of Term 3, so that students are familiar with the route for the Cross Country Carnival.
