A time for humility

A.A Milne was a writer and a poet best known for his works about Winnie-the -Pooh and for his poetry.

Halfway down the stairs (extract)

Is a stair

Where I sit.

There isn't any

Other stair

Quite like

It.

I'm not at the bottom,

I'm not at the top;

So this is the stair

Where

I always

Stop.

(A.A Milne)

As we move toward the half-way point of the year, it is timely to take stock and reflect on the first half of this extraordinary year. This week, in Western Australia, we have had some pleasing announcements with the relaxation of restrictions. Living in the most isolated city in the world has certainly created advantages for our response to the pandemic.

When the A.A Milne poem was forwarded to me, it encouraged a reflection ‘with patience, humility and lightness’ (Anne Muirhead, Loreto Ministries). Those qualities have certainly been hard to find for many whilst dealing with very serious health and economic considerations. Fortunately, many of our political leaders have responded superbly and made decisions in the best interests of their constituents and beyond. Unfortunately, not all decisions are made with humility and we are certainly far from immune from state parochialism in Western Australia.

At our College, the ease in restrictions provides an opportunity to further expand on our offerings in Term 3. We are delighted that this year’s ‘Wicked’ production will be going ahead over the school holidays. Restrictions with numbers permitted to attend means that we will have to prioritise seating. It is important that cast, crew and Year 12 students have first preference with ticket sales. Congratulations to all the cast and crew for their superb capacity to be adaptable and flexible. Thank you also to our College community for their understanding given this year’s unique circumstances.

It has also been exciting to discuss events such as our John XXIII Day, Athletics Carnivals and other co-curricular events knowing that there will be scope for further engagement with our College community. We look forward to providing more information in due course.
