Teaching and Learning

Room 11

Wakakirri's back! Early preparations have started in Rooms 11, 12 and 14 for Wakakirri. This will be the first time our school has entered since 2017 and we are all excited to be involved again. This year will look very different due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will need to film our entry and send it in online rather than performing live.

Simone, Will and I are new to Wakakirri so we've got a learning journey ahead! If there are any parents with skills in sewing, crafting, building, painting, lighting, sound or any other special areas please let us know. We'd be eternally grateful!

At the end of last term our HASS work centred around migration. Our students did a terrific job of interviewing family members, identifying primary sources and using secondary sources to research Australia's history of migration. We have plotted our families' country of origin on a world map and it's been the source of some very interesting discussion for our class.

I'm looking forward to meeting with Room 11 families next week and in week 4 at interviews.

Did you know that Japan celebrates many festivals across the year? The students have begun the term learning about Tanabata - The Star Festival which is celebrated on the 7th of July. The festival is based on an Ancient Chinese legend about two stars and the Milky Way that separates them. The legend tells of a wish that is granted on the evening of the 7th of July each year. Can your child tell you the story?

The Junior Primary students made a papercraft to remember the story of these two stars. We had lots of fun with cotton wool clouds and star stickers!  Meanwhile, the Primary students have been celebrating this festival just like they would in Japan - by writing and decorating their own 'Tanzaku' (wishing) strip and hanging it on our class bamboo tree. We hope our wishes come true!
