Acting Principal’s Report

Positive Principal’s Report

I thought I’d take this opportunity to present a few of pieces of positive news (I’ll leave the COVID-related stuff to the newsfeeds):

1. For a decade or more at MGC, National Schools Tree Day is Murnong Day, where our Year 7 students participate in a Welcome to Country ceremony with local indigenous leaders and plant a murnong, a grassland plant that has been a source of food for indigenous people for thousands of years.

Today, Friday 31st July, is National Schools Tree Day. The good people at Planet Ark have written, “Most Australians have experienced some form of loss over the past 12 months. We've experienced disconnection and isolation and there’s been trauma and hardships. Hugging a tree or simply being amongst nature is a great way to overcome the disconnect many have been feeling or are still struggling with. Join us in the lead up to National Tree Day and share a photo connecting with nature using the hashtag #HugaTreeforNTD

Please see below for two of our Sustainability Leaders, Andrew Vance and Paula McIntosh, hugging a tree today:

We encourage you to do the same and hug a tree today. The Year 7s are posting selfies on their Team page today, here’s one of Elizabeth Harrison, who has taken things one step further:

2. The Birrarung Corridor is progressing, with artificial turf laid and seating to be installed. This space is under the shade sails between the main building and the eastern boundary fence. When students do return to school they will be able to use this space at breaks and be very close to the Yarra. A couple of big planter boxes have been installed, and murnongs may be planted here too. Of course, I forgot to take some photos!

3. The Senior School Exec have been hard at work interviewing teachers as part of a remake of the ABC TV series ‘You Can't Ask That: Teacher Edition’. Edition 1 can be seen now below. Well worth a watch!
