Courage to Care Excursion

On Thursday the 21st of March years 9, 10 and 12 attended a Courage to Care seminar in Hamilton. It was an eventful day, beginning with the trip over, full of hyper children, windy roads and snoozy year 12’s. Once we arrived at Hamilton Alexandra College, we had a quick snacks break and then were seated. We shared the seminar with others our age from different schools, learning their views and opinions on topics.

After an introductory talk and a video of descendants of holocaust survivors, we had the priceless* opportunity to talk to Judy, a holocaust survivor herself. We learnt about her experience, what her family had to do to survive, and how her life has been affected. The highlights of her story were in her own words ‘the best birthday party ever” complete with delicious red apples and the squirrels her father said would always take care of her. Her talk was truly a life changing experience.

We then broke into smaller groups, with a mixture of all the schools attending. This is where we all spoke about our experiences with bullying and learnt more about those who aided in helping those during the holocaust. This is where we were told of the importance of being an ‘upstander’.

It was a great experience where we were vulnerable and inquisitive, learning about how people were treated in the past and how we as ‘upstanders’ can change the way the world we live in, functions.

VCAL Numeracy

On Friday 29th March 2019, VCAL numeracy students at Edenhope College completed their project on “Numeracy and Cooking”.

In this project, all the VCAL students have implemented their mathematical skills in costing a food recipe, estimation of ingredients, applying units of measurements, weighing the ingredients of their recipe to check actual measurements.

Students set up the temperature and time frequently checked the temperature rise. Finally, students cooked their cakes and pudding and showed wonderful teamwork. It was a fun and practical way to learn Maths!!
