EY - Ernst and Young Future of Work Day

On Monday, 2nd July, 2018 Year 11 Oakleigh Grammar students Janvi Gupta and Rebecca Dajee were 2 of just 50 Victorian female students accepted to attend the EY – Ernst and Young Future of Work Day. The day involved a visit to the Melbourne Head Office of EY, where students spent the day learning about what the future of work will look like, with a focus on Careers in STEM.  The day was fully catered for by EY and provided the students with a great opportunity for networking, and to establish a connection with one of the world’s leading workforce organisations.  Well done girls!

OG Senior School Careers Morning Tea

On Tuesday 7th August, I organised and hosted our final Oakleigh Grammar Senior School Careers Morning Tea for 2018.   I was thrilled to obtain Mr. Pete Yao the Chief Impact Officer of Thankyou Co who shared the amazing story of the Thank you Co business enterprise. It started with an impossible idea: a bottle of water that exists to help end the World Water Crisis, which then grew to over 55 products, from personal care products to nappies and baby care.

He advised students that there were many knock backs to grow the business.  For 5 years, the major supermarkets in Australia had said no to stocking the Thankyou products, but with hard work and perseverance, today products are stocked in over 5,500 outlets in Australia, including the major supermarkets! Pete provided great advice to our students not to give up despite setbacks to achieve school and career goals. He was very inspiring to both students and staff.

I thank Pete for sharing the journey and give an extended thanks to Mr. Jamie Evans of McDonald’s Clayton who once again sponsored this event with some delicious morning tea delicacies courtesy of the McCafe menu.

Watch this space to find out our guest speaker line up for the 2019 Careers Morning Teas.

Students and staff of Oakleigh Grammar always like to support different fundraisers.  Donate a gold coin, come to school in casual clothes wearing a special colour, and participating in a different special activities are some of the highlights of our yearly fundraisers!

Middle School students had the opportunity to show their talents by participating in the “Oakleigh Grammar has got talent” show, which was held on Friday, 10th of August.  This year’s show included a diverse number of performances ranging from music, dance, comedy, Science and baking.  Students who came to watch the show donate a gold coin.  We raised $400!  The funds will be donated to support those affected by the Attica fires and especially the Red Cross in Greece.

On Friday 24 August, the Middle School Leaders organised our annual Yellow Day for students in Junior School and ELC. On that day students came to school in casual clothes and wore their favourite yellow piece of clothing. Each student made a gold coin donation. We organise this event every year to support Ronald McDonald House in Clayton. Ronald McDonald House works to enhance the quality of life for seriously ill children and their families by providing a “home away from home” that is welcoming, caring and supportive. With the monies we raise we will buy new toys for the kids, who are spending time in Ronald McDonald House due to their illness. SRC members, Middle School Leaders and JS Social Justice Leaders will visit Ronald McDonald House later on this term, and they will have opportunity to donate all the new toys to the kids and their families.

The Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee organised the 3rd anniversary of the unveiling of the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial on Saturday, 11 August 2018 at "Lemnos Square" in Albert Park. This commemoration event recognises the important role of the Greek island of Lemnos in Australia's ANZAC story, and is dedicated to the Australian nurses and soldiers who served there during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Also,  to the 148 Australian soldiers who remain buried there and to the local community who supported them.  Oakleigh Grammar School attended the event and staff members laid a wreath on behalf of our school.

Wednesday 15 August, it was a very important day in the Greek Orthodox calendar. On that date the Orthodox Church commemorates the Dormition of the Theotokos (The Falling Asleep of the Mother of God). In celebration of this special day, our Middle School students were invited to join other nearby Greek Orthodox Churches, as well as Sts Anargiri Church in Oakleigh, during the morning.

The students represented the School at services in churches to the following areas: Dandenong, East Bentley and Malvern. Members of the Byzantine Choir, as well as Year 9 students attended Sts Anargiri Church and took part of the service by chanting. Middle School students experienced this significant celebration, which they had learnt about during Orthodox Studies classes.

On the 3rd and 10th August our students both Middle and Senior school attend the Small Supplicatory (Paraklesis) Service in English. Our students prayed and our Byzantine Choir both Middle & Senior chanted vividly hymns dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary. We prayed for our school, students, parents, family members, friends. We prayed for the whole world to be protected from pestilence, famine, earthquake, flood, fire and the sword, from invasion of enemies, civil war, and unforeseen death.  Again asking the Lord for His mercy, that He will be kind to entreat as our good God, Who loves all people, and that He may turn away and scatter all wrath and disease that moves against us.

Saints of the Month

27 August St Phanourios

Little is known of the holy Martyr Phanourios, except that which is depicted concerning his martyrdom on his holy icon, which was discovered in the year 1500 among the ruins of an ancient church on Rhodes. Consequently he is called "the Newly Revealed." The faithful pray to Saint Phanourios, especially to help them recover things that have been lost, and because he has answered their prayers so often, the custom has arisen of baking a Phanouropita ("Phanourios-Cake") as a thanks-offering.

Hymn

Fourth Tone

A heavenly song of praise is brightly sung on the earth; * the hosts of the Angels keep an earthly festival now in splendor and radiant joy; * from on high, they praise with hymns the suff'rings and struggles; * and below, the Church doth laud the heavenly glory * thou foundest by thy contests and pains, O glorious Phanourios.

Recipe of Phanourios-Cake

3 cups plain flour

1 cup sugar

¾ cup olive oil

¾ cup orange juice

½ cup brandy

½ cup raisins (or crushed walnuts)

1 tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. clove powder

1 ½ tsp. baking powder

Directions

Beat oil and sugar with electric mixer until dissolved and creamy yellow.

Put the baking powder into the orange juice and stir making sure there are no lumps. Add it to the sugar and oil mix. Beat until combined.

Then add brandy, cinnamon and clove powder.

With the mixer at low speed, gradually add the flour. Then fold in fruit or walnuts.

Grease a pan with oil and dust with sugar and flour. Then pour in batter.

Bake in medium oven (fan-force 1800C) for about an hour or until inserting a toothpick into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool on a rack.

Then take the Phanouropita – Phanouro-Cake to the church to be blessed and you may write the names of your family members and friends to be commemorated for health and strength.

The Maths Show

On the last day of Semester 1, our Years 6, 7 and 8 students attended an in-school presentation of ‘The Maths Show’.

The Maths Show was a live stage performance that combined maths history, magic and puzzles. The interactive sketches introduced maths history, including ancient Babylon and Greece, Famous Women of Maths, Pioneers of Chance, and Data, Shape and Space.

Our students were highly engaged and had a very entertaining and educational maths session.

Science Week

Last week, 13–17th August 2018, Oakleigh grammar celebrated National Science Week. This year the theme of Science Week was Game Changers and Change Makers. The focus was on scientists, engineers, technologists, mathematicians, designers and innovators of the past and present who have made, and are making, great improvements to the way we live.

Our students were involved in a variety of educational activities, including DNA Extractions, circuit building, daily quizzes, and many more exciting lunchtime practical classes.

At our assembly we had a presentation from two ex- Captains of our school, Vanessa Dallas and Sylvia Korlos, who now work in a global engineering firm. They described the work that engineers do, and how they develop and implement solutions to the world’s challenges.

They explained that the skills that will be required in this ever-changing world, are creative problem solving, innovation and thinking ‘outside the box’. Following assembly many enthusiastic students took part in the engineering activities offered by our two visiting engineers.
