Year 9 News

Reflecting on Semester 1 and enjoying the success of our Year 9 students at the recent Awards ceremony gave me great joy. The wonderful cohort of students who have worked hard throughout the first half of the year deserve all of their successes.

I was particularly proud of the way students’ academic excellence and endeavours were celebrated by all students in attendance. There was a definite buzz of excitement in the room when each of their class members collected their awards.

For those students who were not invited onto stage this semester, I encourage you to follow the  behaviours for success that are displayed in each of your classrooms and also in your planner. Working hard in making these behaviours into habits will give you all a great opportunity for increased success at high school.

I would like to extend my thanks to the Principal team and the Middle School Coordinators, Riana Asta, Michael Bourne and Amy Walton as well as Lauren Kelso who all worked hard behind the scenes to contribute to such a wonderful ceremony.

Celebrating Success in Year 9

The Year 9 students have been involved in an initiative to celebrate their individual successes for 2017.

At the end of each term, students write self-identified reasons for why they have been successful during that term.  Reasons for success range from making new friends to receiving a high mark on a CAT. These reasons have been displayed around each home room and serve as a reminder that everyone can be successful.

Year 9 Captains Speech

Awards Assembly

Friday 21 July

Welcome back to school, my name is Reuben and this is Keira and we are the Year 9 captains for 2017.   So many things happened last semester and we are here to go over them once more.

Early into the school term we had 2 different information sessions that went over the expectations of being a Year 9 student, which were successful.

On 27 February, the school swimming carnival was held at Aquanation, where students were given a chance to compete against their peers. Congratulations to the winning house, Cummins.

Also early on in the year we had the Gratitude board put up in the main corridor next to the service kiosk, where we can all write what we are grateful for in our lives.

On 15 March, the Grade 6/Year 7 Sports Day was held and Year 9 students were given the opportunity to help out with things such as scoring, coaching and leading the classes to their appropriate location for their event.

3-Way Conferences were held a few days later, where parents and students could talk to their teachers and figure out where the student is at in their course and how they may be able to improve.

On 24 April, the ANZAC day assembly occurred where Year 7-10 students gathered to remember those who sacrificed themselves for the sake of our country and wellbeing.

On May 4, Year 10 and 11 students studying Business Management helped run Market Day, where we could go to their stalls and buy their products from them.

On 28 May, we celebrated IDAHOT day, run by the SRC. It was to spread awareness about homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

On 8 June,  we took part in a Wellbeing day. Female students went the Lutheran Church in Lilydale and male students went to the Lilydale Bowls Club. We learnt how to be resilient, and we took part in activities together to help build relationships with our peers. We also had special guests; VCE students, who came to speak to us about resilience and useful tips for the future. Soon afterwards regional cross country took place at Yarra Glen Racecourse. Hopefully all the students were happy with their results at the event.

On 21 June, the Mid-Year Music Concert was held, where a variety of different talented students performed. And finally, this week students are taking part in a Year 10 Subject Selection Information session.

We do not have long to think about what we would all like to participate in in Year 10, the list of subjects and the selection form will be released soon on Compass, so get thinking! Looking ahead, a very exciting event, City Experience, is coming from Weeks 6-8 where we will all be going into the city. We will all meet at a set location and travel around completing tasks in groups.

In other exciting news,  Year 9 Camp has been locked in. We will be going to Tasmania. We will use different modes of transport such as flight, boat and bus. It should be an amazing experience for all the people who got themselves one of the very limited spots available.

We hope that everybody had a good holiday and hope you are enjoying your new subjects.

Good luck for the rest of the semester.
