E.A.L Students

Junior E.A.L

Last term, our Junior EAL class completed a unit called ‘Childhood Memories’. As part of this unit, students were asked to recall moments and memories from their own childhoods. As we had all spent some time growing up overseas, it was interesting to hear about what we remembered of our lives in Syria, Pakistan, Iraq and the USA. We then read a poem called ‘I remember’ and used this as a model to write our own poems.

'I Remember' by Sabah Tarsha

Year 7

I remember when I was a child I was afraid of the mice and of the cockroaches because I hate them and I still do.

I remember when I woke up I went to my mum and I kissed her and still now I wake up and I kiss her every day.

I remember my grandfather’s house. It was so beautiful. It had big stairs, lots of rooms and lots of people in it and if I was angry, I went there.

I remember my happy memory, my happy memory was when they celebrated my birthday, and when my little brother came to this world, it was amazing.

I remember my first day at school. It was normal for me and I started talking to students like me and I started making friends.

I remember when I started talking to my mum and said what am I going to be in the future? I started looking at my mum and she said you can be whatever you like, you can be a doctor or an engineer or a teacher. Then I decided to be an engineer and in the army.

I remember when my mum bought for us 11 birds and 4 chickens and I cat.

I remember my sad memory when my grandfather died. I was 13.

I remember when I hit my little sister. I went to my room and started crying because I hit her and I promised myself that I was not going to hit her again.

I remember when I was 11 years old and the teacher sent me to the other teacher to be punished. She said, ‘Hold out your hands!’ I didn’t, so she was trying to open my hands and I didn’t. So she came to hit me and I took the stick from her and I hit her. I got suspended for two days because if they had expelled me, they would have had to give me my money back. That was my happiest day ever!

'I Remember' By Shokira Ahmadi

Year 9

I remember when I was a little girl,

Hearing the horrible sound of the rain,

And screaming for help.

I remember the days rushing to get ready,

Eating my breakfast as fast as I could,

and running for school.

I remember the beautiful sounds of birds,

In the blue sky as we walked in the cool morning,

And eating ice cream on the way to school.

I remember the world of fantasy,

For my fairy tale doll, making her dress up,

And doing her make up for a party.

I will always remember the ghost’s sound behind me,

When I was walking in the dark room,

And scared of being caught,

I remember laughing at one of our classmates,

Who was doing strange actions behind the teacher

While she was writing on the white board.

I remember the happiness when I heard,

My name for first position in result day,

And couldn’t stop my tears.

I remember the sad times when one of our birds died,

And other one was left alone in the cage,

And I didn’t do anything for him.

I will always remember my happy and

Sad memories, because I had really beautiful days,

That have passed and will never come back.
