Hume Region Hockey

On Tuesday 16th October, a group of 14 Year 9 &10 students travelled to Albury to compete in the Hume Region Hockey Competition, leaving school at 7am. Having not had a team to compete against in the local level, this was the first time the group played a game together as a team. Many players in the team had worked hard in the lead up to the event, participating in practices on Wednesday lunch times during Term 3 and a two hour practice at McEwen Reserve the week before. The team was made up of some experienced hockey players as well as some who had never played the game before.

It was a nice day with a slight breeze for the morning, but the rain hit in the afternoon during second game. Having not played together as a team prior to the day proved to be a disadvantage as we played against some very competitive teams who had played together before. However, despite the disadvantage, our players worked well as a team and showed a level of improvement in every game played, creating a number of scoring opportunities with some quick breaks of speed and hitting down the ground. Congratulations to Joy Parnell and Reza Shirzadi who were our goal scorers on the day.

The Convenor of the day – Peter Ternes pulled the group aside at the end of day to congratulate them on the level of skill and competitiveness they demonstrated for a team with many new hockey players. He said it was obvious they had worked on their skills and that their experience in other sports clearly shone through. It was great to see the experienced hockey players on the team showing leadership and coaching skills as they taught the game to the newer players and continued to give pointers as the day went on and lead by example on the field.

Excellent sportsmanship was demonstrated by our students who made friends with some opposition players who also commented on what a nice group of people our team was and that they demonstrated some great hockey skills. I would like to congratulate all the students who participated in the day. You worked hard, played well and learnt a lot and I enjoyed sharing the day with you.
