In conjunction with their inquiry unit focusing on South America, year 3 and 4 students have been exploring the traditional South American craft of rug making. In particular, students were introduced to Zapotek rugs which have been made in the same way for hundreds of years in Southern Mexico. Students briefly saw how the weavers sourced, carded, spun and dyed their own wool before creating rugs on handmade looms. Zapotek rugs are brightly coloured and patterned. The patterns are based on geometric shapes.
The students practical task was to create their own version of a Zapotek rug using paper strips. Woolen tassels were added to create the impression of a rug. I am so impressed at the amazing, colourful patterns that have been created so far!
On Tuesday 13 June, all students participated in the annual wellbeing day. They rotated through four activities in their house groups: dancing, completing team challenges, working in pairs and demonstrating ways to be an everyday hero. The day finished with an entertaining performance of Hercules by Alpha Shows.
Prep: The Prep students did a fantastic presentation of their number song at assembly! Congratulations everyone!
Grade 1:
The students used our French puppets to practice their greetings. It was a lot of fun.
Grade 2:
The students read facts about the 10 biggest French cities and made a short presentation in front of the class
Grades 5/6:
I was very proud of the students for playing several games of"Guess Who?" in French.
They all had a go at asking a question and they played very well in teams. Well done everyone!
In the Junior School, they have continued to finetune their programming skills in coding and create more complex paths for the Blue-Bot robots. Some students even started to create their own paths for the Blue-Bots, using their creative and collaboration skills.
In grades 3 and 4, students have now built a Mars buggy all ready for programming in our next session. The kids have become efficient at building with the Vex Go kits and should be proud of their persistence and willing to try something new, along with working well in teams. I am looking forward to seeing what we can do next with these great kits!
Grade 5/6A continued with their learning about light. In their last session, they measured shadows and investigated what happens to shadows when the light source is close to an object or further away. Again, it is great to see the students working well collaborating together.
