Curriculum News

NAIDOC WeeK
Due to NAIDOC week being in the last week of the school holidays we will have an Indigenous focus across most curriculum areas for the next two weeks. The connections Indigenous peoples have with the land and country will be explored in various ways, through the use of storytelling and art.
English
Reading and Viewing
In Reading, we will be continuing to explore the concept of rhyming and syllables, as well as completing our formal learning through the Jolly Phonics program. We will spend the remaining weeks of the term consolidating the letter-sound combinations learnt, as well as continuing to explore the SMART Foundation sentences of the week. The students will work through blending learnt sounds together to read words, as well as manipulating the sounds to make new words. We will also be practising our comprehension skills, including predicting what might occur during a story and retelling what we have read. We will also be making connections between reading and writing through the use of our sounds, sight words and punctuation.
Writing
In Writing, students will continue to experiment with writing features such as spaces between words, capital letters and fullstops. We will be writing to entertain an audience, first with a focus on Nursery Rhymes and then moving onto historical narratives, where they will be writing about parables in the Bible and their own personal history. We will continue to explore different forms of punctuation, including exclamation and question marks.
Speaking and Listening
The students will complete activities that focus on improving their oral language skills during Literacy activities. We will also begin to participate in small Reader’s Theatre sessions, where the students will practise and present small plays in front of their peers. Our Language Experience program will resume in Week 2, so please make sure you practise and help prepare your child. A list of topics can be found at the end of this newsletter.
Please note - Our parent helpers program will begin again this week. If you are unable to assist on your rostered day can you please email me and let me know so I can make any changes needed.
Mathematics
Number and Algebra
In Term 3, Foundation students will continue to expand their skills in counting forwards and backwards and ordering numbers. Students will also consolidate their understanding of counting on, when adding two collections and explore the concept of counting back when subtracting. We will also be exploring the concept of multiplication and division through equal sharing. We will end the term investigating Australian currency with a focus on identifying the different coins and notes. The students will continue to work through Addition and Subtraction Mental strategies, with the main focus being on subitising (random collections) and the partitioning of 5.
Measurement and Geometry
In Measurement and Geometry, Foundation students will explore the concept of 3D objects, where we will be identifying shapes in our environment, and the concepts of Mass and Capacity through hands-on experiences.
Statistics and Probability
There will be no Statistics and Probability taught this term but we will be focusing on probability in Term 4.
Inquiry/RE
In Inquiry, students will be focusing on the big concept of ‘Story’. We will be focusing on understanding our own personal story, including where we were born, where our family members were born and how we communicate our history to others through different storytelling methods.
We will be linking our Religion unit to the same concept of story, where we will be exploring how we can develop our relationship with God, through our understanding of parables and stories within the Bible.
Wellbeing
In our Social and Emotional Learning sessions this term, the students will be exploring the concept of Help Seeking, through role play and classroom discussions. We will also continue to practise the skills of turn taking and how to work and play cooperatively with a partner or small group.
