Around the Classes - Year 1

School Arrival

Class starts promptly at 8.40am. To avoid disruptions to student’s learning could you please ensure your child is at school on time. 

The school gates open each morning at 8.15am.

Religious Education

Students will explore a Christian way of relating to others. They learn about the story of the Ten Lepers and the teaching on how many times to forgive in order to explore the place of forgiveness, reconciliation, love and gratitude in relationships. Students will also learn about signs of God’s love.

Literacy

Students will continue to participate in a variety of activities that will develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

 

Reading

Students will:

  • Read silently to themselves and aloud to an audience
  • Participate in teacher-led, guided reading sessions 
  • Understand and decode unknown words.
  • Develop the skills needed to ask questions before and while reading a text
  • Make connections to self and to other texts
  • Practise and develop fluency and phrasing when reading

Writing

In writing students will participate in a variety of activities to meet their needs including:

  • Participate in handwriting sessions, focussing on the correct formation of letters.
  • Experience different writing genres: Information Reports (people, things and places)
  • Develop their knowledge of correct punctuation and grammar.

Speaking and listening

Students will be given opportunities to engage in ‘Show and Tell’. This valuable experience will focus on building various important skills:

  • confidence
  • audible voice
  • clear articulation
  • focussed listening
  • appropriate and relevant questioning and answering

Students will also practice their speaking and listening during guided reading rotations.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes. They will be able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

Inquiry

CONNECTIONS: Through Generations

Students will learn words to describe events in the past, present, and future and words to describe a point of view. They will consider the importance of places to people in their community and people from different cultures. Students will learn about ways that stories from the past can be told.
