School Arrivals
Class starts promptly at 8.40am. To avoid disruptions to student’s learning could you please ensure your child is at school on time.
The school gates open each morning at 8.15am.
Religious Education
Protected by God (Old Testament)
In this unit students explore the experience of God as protector. They are introduced to stories about Moses and David who were protected by God and in turn led and protected their people. Students identify people in their own lives who are sources of God’s love and protection.
Literacy
The students are exposed to daily modelling of reading and writing strategies. They experience opportunities to practise these skills.
Reading
- Smart Spelling Word of the Week / Sentence / Word List
- Sight word recognition
- Syllables
- Reading strategies - chunking, initial letter blends, word endings, medial, initial and final sounds
- Concepts about print including - reading aloud simple print and electronic texts that include some frequently used words and predominantly oral language structures, punctuation; full stop, exclamation, question, comma, capital letter.
Writing
- Recounts - a way of retelling an important event or describing an experience that you have had to others, such as a school trip or a funny story
- Narratives - the purpose of a Narrative is to tell the audience a story. It can be written to motivate, educate or most commonly entertain. Narratives can be both fact or fiction.
- Information Report - provides readers with information on a chosen topic by providing them with facts. Generally an Information Report is written to provide facts about a living or non-living object. It can be an individual object or a group of objects.
- Using finger spaces within writing and using simple punctuation such as full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and question marks.
- Focusing on correct posture and pencil grip during writing.
- Re-reading writing / modelling and editing.
Speaking and Listening
- Contributing ideas and information during group discussions.
- Recounting stories and personal experiences sequentially.
- Asking and answering simple questions in discussions.
- Actively listening to the teacher during learning time.
- Sharing personal experiences to an audience using appropriate volume and a clear voice while presenting their weekly “Chit Chat’.
Mathematics
Number
- Exploring subtraction strategies such as counting back, less than and finding the difference
- Exploring the concept of sharing (division) and how to share a collection of objects equally
- Exploring the concept of fractions - whole and half
Measurement, Geometry and Space
- Time - sequencing events according to their duration. Language and concepts used will be yesterday, today, tomorrow, second, minute, hour, day, month, week, year.
- Learning to tell the time o'clock, analogue and digital clock and recognise the features of a clock.
- Identify and compare: Mass - objects that are heavy or light / Length - compare items in length, using words longer than, shorter than, the same / Capacity - compare items - full, empty, half full
Inquiry
Students will learn about the different features of animals and how those features help them to live in their environment. Students will learn about Australian animals and consider how they can save water and protect native habitats. Your students will use their imagination to design an animal using parts of different animals. They will use basic cutting and pasting skills to create a model of their animal.
The Resilience Project
Through The Resilience Project, students are learning about self-awareness and recognising emotions. They will develop reflective practice and self-management skills in order to become confident, resilient and adaptable.
