Around the Classes - Year 6

School Arrivals

Class starts promptly at 8.40am. To avoid disruptions to student’s learning could you please ensure your child is at school on time. 

The school gates open each morning at 8.15am.

Religious Education

This term is a very important term for our candidates who are in the process of preparing for their Confirmation. All students will be looking at the signs and symbols associated with the Sacrament, the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit and the significance of being called as missionaries to share the Catholic faith. Following Confirmation, students will continue to develop their understanding and knowledge of the seven Sacraments.

Literacy

Reading

Students have commenced a Novel Study to help in preparation for next year. Students are reading a range of texts including Rowan of Rin, Charlotte’s Web and The BFG which they will break down chapter by chapter and explore the themes and ideas within the text. They are continuing to work on a range of skills and comprehension strategies whilst doing so. 

 

Writing 

The students will be doing Persuasive Writing and exploring the persuasive devices and structural requirements of these texts. Across the year level, we will be closely focusing on the skill of editing and proofreading in order to improve our work further. 

 

Speaking

Towards the end of the term, they will be participating in a debating tournament where they will learn the skills and structure of debates. 

Mathematics

This term, in Mathematics the students will revise the four processes and the order of operations. They will continue and extend developing their knowledge of working with fractions, decimals and percentages. 

 

When learning about financial mathematics, students will investigate and calculate percentage discounts on sale items eg, 10%, 20%. 

 

The students will conduct chance experiments with both small and large numbers of trials. They will compare observed and expected frequencies across experiments. 

 

The students will begin describing probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students will be planning and preparing their stalls and products for the upcoming Charity Fete. They will explore their teamwork skills as they work on developing their products and will have the opportunity to use their creativity and imagination when doing so. Students will be raising money for St Vincent De Paul and Caritas. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks!
