Active Kids, Active Lives
‘Australia's Physical Activity Recommendations for 5–12 Year Olds states that kids need to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, but can benefit from up to several hours of physical activity over the course of each day. This activity can be a combination of moderate to vigorous activities.’ (Betterhealthliving.gov.au)
As we move into the colder months, it can be increasingly difficult to encourage our children to remain active and aim to fulfill the 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Cold, wet, rainy days makes it difficult to full fill outside play and sports.
The Better Health Chanel Website is a fantastic resource for parents, which talks about the benefits of physical activity for children and ways to encourage this as we head into the colder, wet months of the year.
Some of the physical benefits include:-
- improved cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs)
- better sleep patterns
- increased self-esteem and confidence
- improved concentration
- increased flexibility
- opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills.
At Jells Park we aim to provide as much sporting and physical activities as possible for students during their time at school.
- Weekly PE classes
- Year Level sport games
- PMP (Foundation)
- Lunchtime clubs
- Class Brain Breaks and games
- Extra Curricular Sporting Opportunities
- Level 4-6 Interschool Sports
As we move to winter, it can be harder to motivate ourselves to continue our own and children’s physical activity levels.
The Website recommends:-
- Introducing activities to children at a young age.
- Adults setting good examples for their children.
- Immerse children in a wide range of activities as they grow.
- Provide alternatives to structured sport for children and families.
- Selecting activities that can be performed inside.
