Year 4 Spotlight

Inquiry: Scienceworks Excursion

The Year 4 students explored Scienceworks as part of their learning about Earth and space. Here are some student reflections.

This term we went to Scienceworks and had a presentation about the Earth, Moon and Sun. We learnt about size comparison, their movements, the northern and southern hemisphere and how seasons are caused. The sun and moon look the same size because the sun is much further away. Their movements help with seasons and temperatures, and the northern and southern hemispheres have a great deal in how seasons work. It was so fun and educational.

This term we went to Scienceworks. The Planetarium was amazing! FIrst we had to lay down in our seats and look up at the roof. We watched a movie called ‘Tilt’. It was about the earth’s tilt and how seasons work. The ceiling then became the night sky. We saw the placings of constellations. It was so fun!

This term we went to Scienceworks. We went to the general viewing area. At the top level, in Beyond Perception, we went to the mirror maze and I almost got lost. At the bottom level, there was a sports section that included running races. Next, we went to an environmental section that had lots of plants and a space area. It was calming and relaxing.

Writing – 4B

This term students have been busy sharing their opinions when writing their very own persuasive text. They have been learning to add in persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, facts and statistics and a call to action, to make their arguments stronger.

Here are some examples. Do they convince you?

Maths – 4C

This term in Maths, students have been learning how to use strategies to work out the answers to their times tables, and building their fluency and accuracy in multiplication. They have enjoyed working on non-routine maths tasks. They also learnt about perimeter, area, and statistics. Here are some reflections about Maths this term:

Multiplication

  • I learnt how to use a trick with all our fingers to answer the 9 times tables. ~ Stella
  • I learnt how to double, double, double to answer my 8 times tables. ~ Lola
  • I learnt how to answer my eights by doubling the fours. ~ Jacob
  • I learnt how to use the grid method to multiply numbers. ~ Will

Perimeter:

  • We used l+l+w+w for measuring the perimeter around objects. We use cm, mm,m, and, km. ~ Sibella

Area:

  • We learnt about cm squared. ~ Will
  • I learnt that if you figure out your area for squares, you can just halve it and then you will get the answer for triangles. ~ Rose

Statistics:

Non- Routine Tasks:

  • Doing the non-routine tasks were hard but they help with solving problems, and make you use different combinations. You learn that you don’t always get the answer in the first try. ~ Nick
