What am I reading ?

In the Winter Dark” – Tim Winton

I usually have a couple of books on the go. At the moment I have just picked up “In the Winter Dark” by Tim Winton. This is a potentially a quick read as it is only about 100 pages long. As with many of Winton’s novels, this is set in rural Australia. This book has been characterised as a suspense story, of the Australian gothic genre.

The thing I love about Winton’s writing is his ability to be eloquently expressive. The landscape can be immersive or overbearing and take on the attributes of a character. The characters often have a relationship with the landscape and it is the juxtaposition between the stoic, dry Australian dialogue and the characters emotional undercurrents that I find intriguing.

I have only just started this Winton novel but I look forward to completing my foray into “In the Winter Dark” and the Australian gothic.
