Making their vote count

There is no doubt that young people are powerful. Young people are stepping up in huge numbers to take action on the issues that matter. It has been thoroughly rewarding, as a teacher, to see our present and past Politics and Law students engaging in this Federal Election - taking their learning from the classroom into the real world. Since the election was called in April, many recent graduates have been in contact to discuss the election campaign; to share their thoughts on policies and how they intend to ‘seek justice’ in this brave new world. Here are some comments from our alumni:

I decided to do early voting this time. I have to say, every time I go to vote I think of our PAL class and you telling us ‘Make your vote count’! I promise to always do this (Class of 2018).

I worked at a Polling Booth in the northern suburbs. Was great casting my vote for the first time. Made me think of the mock election we had in class in Year 11 (Class of 2019).

For the first time in my memory the seat of Curtin has an uncertain outcome. All the more excitement for my first federal election (Class of 2019).

I’ve been thinking of our PAL classes constantly in the lead up to the election. I’m so excited for Saturday. Will be working at one of the booths on the day (Class of 2020).

As I prepare to vote for the first time, I still rely greatly on my politics and law education throughout high school. I feel a great deal of confidence in knowing what my vote will count towards and am empowered by my understanding of how the possible election outcomes will influence what parliament looks like for the next three years. I have found it interesting to listen to the concerns of my generation as we navigate voting for the first time. Many of my peers have highlighted their concern for climate change and social justice, thus I think the platforms for the Greens and the Teal Independents have made a great impact on first time voters (Class of 2020)

This election has been interesting to watch. Both in my electorate and the country over - it seems too close to call. Every party has had to campaign hard in my electorate, however I’ve been disappointed by the amount of mudslinging that’s taken preference over actual policy. I’m very keen to watch the count tonight, who knows which way it will go (Class of 2021)

I’ve missed our PAL lessons. I’m so upset that I’m still 17 – as I won’t be able to vote on Saturday. Next time! (Class of 2021)

Some current PAL students shared their experiences going with their parents to vote and collecting ALL of the how-to-vote cards to study later - others attended election day parties. For Year 11 PAL student Harry Court, he took part in a student lead movement - ‘We can’t vote, but you can’ - using student power to put climate in people’s minds when they went to cast their vote.

It is my fervent hope that when our students leave the classroom and take their first steps into the real world that they do so as politically informed global citizens – and that we’ve inspired them to always…‘make their vote count’.

Refugee Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about refugees and celebrate their positive contribution to Australian society. We want to create a welcoming culture and better understanding between different communities to encourage successful integration that enables refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia.

As part of this celebration, we are excited to welcome the Fare Go Food truck back to the College. The Fare Go Food Truck is a social enterprise staffed by refugees and asylum seekers. ACC Cross-Country

It’s hard to find the words to describe how incredible our cross-country team performed at the 2022 ACC Cross-Country Carnival. Similar to all teams, John XXIII College faced challenges with members unable to run due to COVID-19 and other illnesses. This did not stop our students will and determination to step up and try their absolute best in all races on the day. Cross-country is won by the team with the lowest overall score, with points equalling a student’s finishing position (1st = 1 point etc.). There was a moment during the day where John XXIII College was 145 points behind the leader, meaning our year groups to come had a battle on their hands to try and close the gap.

Every age division team absolutely blew us away with their performances. When it was time for the final two races end of the day, the Open Girls and Boys, John XXIII College was still 130 points behind the leading school. Despite being in the middle of their exams, our Years 11 and 12 team members all arrived ready to take on a near impossible challenge. Somehow, against all odds, our girls closed this gap to 64 points and then our boys were unleashed and secured the overall champion school with a 34 point lead!

Yet another beautiful sporting memory has been made this year for our wonderful students. Talent has always been evident at John XXIII College, however, it’s the sporting spirit that has really started to shine through that makes these achievements even more magical. For every race, there was a line of John XXIII students cheering each other on. Winning is amazing, however, seeing the bonds being formed by our sporting teams is such a privilege to witness and we hope this continues to grow.

The shields brought home at the end of the day included:

  • Overall Aggregate
  • Aggregate Boys
  • Aggregate Girls
  • U19 Girls
  • U19 Boys
  • U14 Boys
  • U14 Girls
