Principal's Report

By Frank Catalano

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

I trust all is well with you and your family and welcome to this fortnight’s newsletter where so much is shared about our fabulous school.

As per usual, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 9802 9938 or via email at frank.catalano@education.vic.gov.au.

Novel Coronavirus Update

It has been very pleasing to note that the number of confirmed cases throughout our school has been rather minimal with only a few cases spread throughout the school. Naturally this is a result of everyone being vigilant by ensuring the children remain at home if they are feeling unwell and also utilising the Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT’s). Once again, thank you everyone for the manner in which the entire GWPS community have supported one another.

Line Marking Throughout the School

Thank you to the families who have spoken to me about the line marking throughout the school. Over the weekend the existing line marking was updated and some of the ELC line marking reinstated. Fingers crossed that the weather is kind to the tradespeople and by the time our newsletter is distributed all of the line marking will be completed!

Attached are some photographs of the line marking.

Mother’s Day

By the time this newsletter is distributed Mother’s Day will be a distant memory, never the less, I trust all of our school mums had a wonderful Mother’s Day. Also a sincere thank you to the numerous parents who assisted with the Mother’s Day stall and the Community Relations Committee for their outstanding organisation.

Intra and Inter – School Cross Country Events

It was wonderful that we were able to complete our intra-school races a few weeks ago and tomorrow the children selected will be representing our school at the District event. Best wishes to everyone involved and I look forward to sharing our school’s results in the next newsletter.

Education Week

As everyone would be aware, next week is Education Week across the state and our school we will be hosting an open morning next Tuesday, May 24th. A Compass Post was distributed recently outlining what has been organised and I look forward to seeing as many families as possible in our school.

Congratulations to Tevin (Year 2)

Tevin has recently found the joy of building with Lego and wow, he is really talented too as he has built numerous creations for our school and also home. During the recent holidays his family purchased a very difficult Jeep Wrangler set for him to build, thinking that it would take him a few days; but not Tevin as he completed it in 1 day!!

He even created a video which he proudly shared with his class and I. Attached are some photos of Tevin and his latest Lego build!

Well done and congratulations Tevin as it is fabulous to see how much your level of concentration has improved and not to mention your amazing ability to read and follow instructions in order to build things designed for much older children!

Chess Tournament

Our Junior Chess Team competed in the NSC Junior Primary Zonal at St Bridget's Primary School on Tuesday, and I am very proud to report that they finished in 1st place! Well done and congratulations to all of the children involved as you should be incredibly proud of your achievements.

The team consisted of:

Year Prep: Reyashi

Year 1: Naveen and Ethan

Year 2: Aibel, Lesara, Saheli and Amaya

Year 3: Reyan

May I also take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who assisted the children in various ways – thank you, well done and congratulations everyone!

Also congratulations to the children who received a medal:

  • Amaya – Overall Girls Gold
  • Saheli – Year 2 Gold and
  • Praveen – Year 1 – Silver
  • Reyashi – Prep Gold medal

Congratulations to Shaya (Year 4)

Shaya recently donated 20cm of her hair through the Sustainable Salons project to make wigs for children and adults who suffer from Alopecia and Cancer. Shaya was growing her hair for over one year to support this great cause.

Sustainable Salons send ponytails directly to wigmakers and to charitable organisations such as Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation (AAAF) to be made into charitable wigs.

We are so proud of you Shaya as this is such a wondeful gesture to help an organisation supporting sick children and adults. Well done for participating in such a great cause. Your hair looks amazing!
