How Did It Begin?

By Jessica 6C

Hi my name is Jessica, and I’m in Year 6,.

I am fascinated about how different sayings, traditions and superstitions begun, what about you? Would you like to know about these tryouts of things?

This fortnight I have written about:

- The Curtsy and

- Crossing of your knife and fork!

I hope you learn and enjoy reading all about these and I look forward to sharing some more next time!

The Curtsy:
A curtsy is a traditional gesture of greeting, in which a girl’s formal greeting was made by bending the knees with one foot in front of the other.  It was an act of respect mainly made by women in the olden days.  In Western culture it is the feminine equivalent of bowing by males.

Crossing of your knife and fork :
The position of your silverware can tell your server whether you are resting or finished with your meal: a crossed fork and knife means you are taking a break, while a fork and knife at the eleven o'clock position signifies a completed meal.
If you cross your knife with your spoon, you are implying the food didn't taste good and that you wish bad luck on the chef.
