This year Greeks, Australians and New Zealanders commemorated the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The Battle of Crete is a very significant historical event and is commemorated annually all around Australia.

Australia and Greece have a close relationship based on historical ties. Between 20 May, and 1 June 1941, World War II came to the Greek island of Crete. Australian soldiers fought alongside Greek, New Zealand and British troops, including to defend Crete against German invasion. Twenty days later, Australians were ordered to evacuate Crete. Those who missed the evacuation and were not taken prisoner owed their lives to the Cretan villagers who risked their own lives and helped Australians survive by providing food and places to hide until they could escape.

This year, the commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Crete took place on Sunday 22nd of May and our School was invited to attend. Senior School Leaders together with Unit 1 and 3 LOTE Modern Greek students represented our School at the Doxology at the Church of St Eustathios in South Melbourne. After the service, a Wreath Laying ceremony was conducted at the Shrine of Remembrance. School Captain Chris Tsiagalos and Vice-Captain Stavroula Kourkoutzelos laid a wreath on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar. Students had also the opportunity to meet the Greek and Australian Armed Forces.

Congratulation to students who had the privilege to represent our school with pride in this significant historical event for Australia and Greece.
