The Arts

Performing Arts Club meetings have commenced in Term 2, with participating students deciding to work on putting on a Musical Performance of ‘Be Our Guest’ from Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Their final performance piece will be presented in Semester 2. Thank you to the students in the cast and the students who have placed their interest to work backstage for this project. If you would like to join the musical item, there are still some spots available in the chorus, so please contact Mr Karakottas. Meetings are held every Friday Week A lunchtime in room 301.

As you may already know, the OG Arts Club has worked tirelessly in creating artworks for the ‘My Room Children's Cancer Charity’ event. Participating students are going to make 110 canvas artworks on the theme of ‘bringing joy in darkness’ – art about hope, inspiration and joy. Mr Dean Damatopoulos is coordinating this event, with Ms Sacco and Ms Smit running the Art Club each week. If you are interested, come and support our local community while having fun being creative!

Here are some of the students’ reflections:

Guneet: On Wednesday the 25th of May the Year 7 art class went into the city to many different art galleries. The first gallery we went to was the ‘’Who are You’’ exhibit at the Ian Potter centre behind federation square. We went up 10 flights of stairs and went to go see some Australian portraiture. It gave us inspiration for our art assignment that we are working on. We also saw a pile of plasticine skulls and we saw artwork that showed their identity. There were also animations and sculptures throughout the exhibit. It was cool to see all the artworks and interpret the story behind them.

Thomas: After we ate recess at federation square, we walked to the national gallery of Victoria where we saw many national and international exhibits such as British and European ceramics and paintings and we also saw the Indian art exhibit. We walked past lots of different unique clothing over the decades from many different nations and beautifully sculpted ceramics that were very lifelike and interesting. I was very intrigued by the colourful paintings and enjoyed walking in the art exhibits with my friends. The paintings were very detailed and fascinating and I took many pictures of the paintings I liked. To entertain us while we were walking, me and my friend George were handshaking random people which was really funny. After this, we walked 15 minutes to the food court in Southbank and everyone got Maccas and ice creams after. It was very rewarding after all that walking.

Katerina: After we saw the international and national exhibits at the NGV we went to the beautiful garden and the pink lake behind the gallery. Varshitha, Antonios, Vasia and myself soaked our feet in the freezing cold water and ran through the water splashing everyone around us. We then saw the sculptures in the garden and the autumn trees before taking a group photo in front of the lake. We then saw coins in the water fountain and later we went to lunch.

I hope to visit the national gallery with my family sometime this year.Overall this excursion was fun because I got to spend time with my friends and teachers.

Sammi: After our lunch at McDonald’s, we took a tram to Docklands where we visited Art-Vo which is an interactive 3D illusional gallery. We got to immerse ourselves in a variety of paintings such as swimming with the dolphins, getting stuck in an aquarium, falling from skyscrapers, escaping from a purple hippo, surfing in the water and we took a group photo on the ice blocks. It was cool to have that experience. Overall, I think the excursion was really fun and we should visit it again soon.

Thank you for reading this month’s news!

Kind regards,

Nick Karakottas

Year 7 Art

On Wednesday the 25th of May, 2022, the Year 7 Art students went with Ms Sacco and Ms Susie to the Ian Potter Centre, where students saw the ‘Who are you?’ exhibit of Australian portraiture. Students were inspired by many artworks for their portraiture artwork which they are creating and drawing at school. Students then went to the NGV Australia and International exhibits before visiting the pink pool and sculpture park in the garden behind the NGV. We then went for lunch at Southbank and ate McDonald’s or Grilled before making our way by tram to ‘ArtVo’ in Docklands. ‘ArtVo’ is an interactive exhibit where students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a perspective 3D artwork, as part of their ‘identity’ art project.

Visual Communication and Design

On Thursday the 19th of May, the Year 9, 11 and 12 Visual Communication and Design students went to the Melbourne Museum to see the ‘Top Designs’ exhibit. The exhibit showcased many VCE year 12 design students' work who received a high score for their studies in 2021. Students took notes and were inspired by a range of visual design work. Some of these included; the environmental design of architectural buildings of alpine and coastal resorts, communication design of book covers, business cards, logos and printed t-shirts and take away cups and bags and even an industrial designed ‘hot pot’ for Asian inspired café.

We then made our way to other exhibits at the Melbourne Museum, which included the ‘Bug Zone’ exhibit, where the year 9 students had previously designed and created a postcard for that particular exhibition, as well as a visit to the ‘Dinosaur Walk’. We then stopped for lunch at the food court in Melbourne Central, before making our way to ACMI where students saw ‘The story of the moving image’, exhibition. Here students saw many design careers and their work ranging from; animations to film to set and costume design. Students even played games that were created and made by game developers in the exhibition, ranging from ‘Pac-Man’ to ‘The Simpsons’ games as well as other various computer games.

Overall, the students were inspired by how many design careers and pathways they can choose to study at university and about the design work that was produced.
