EY Industry Insights excursion

Six Western Heights College students took the opportunity to visit global professional services firm EY’s Melbourne headquarters yesterday.

Thanks to our partnership with the education charity Ourschool, our Business Management students were invited to their Industry Insights session, alongside students from Ourschool’s 31 other partner schools.

EY started as an accounting firm but has grown to offer many types of services to businesses. The six speakers all work in different parts of EY and come from Victorian public high schools, including one from Geelong:

Christina Yakovlev – Finance graduate – St Albans Secondary College Class of 2017

Olivia Davis – Infrastructure Advisory consultant – Melbourne Girls’ College Class of 2016

Matthew Harter – Climate Change and Sustainability Services manager – Rowville Secondary College Class of 2006

Jodi Bastian – Real Estate Advisory Services director – Warrnambool College Class of 1997 Sam Pritchard – Technology Consulting director – Geelong High School Class of 1991

Caitlin Stewart – Campus Recruitment senior consultant – Ringwood Secondary College Class of 2014

Each speaker had a different pathway into the business. Some got their foot in the door by doing an internship during their university course and making a good impression. While the most surprising speaker’s pathway included starting an electrician apprenticeship, becoming a hairdresser, working on cruise ships and then moving into public speaking, before the company he was working with was acquired by EY.

We also learnt what their jobs involved, what it’s like to work for a global company and their advice for students, and we also got to ask them our own questions in break-out groups.

“It was very insightful and it made me not have to worry about my ATAR score because one of the speakers had a bad ATAR score as well, and that boosted my motivation to learn. I also learnt that I don’t have to focus on one thing; I can change my career whenever I want.” – Ali, Year 12.

“It was a really good opportunity for us students to go and experience what the outside world looks like and get advice on what we should do after school. What matters the most is you working hard and enjoying what you learn.” – Qudrat, Year 12.

Thank you to EY and the Ourschool alumni service for an eye-opening and inspiring day!
