A well balanced diet provides all the essential nutrients needed for your brain and body to function well, helping to keep you both physically and mentally healthy. A balanced diet can help prevent numerous diseases and health ailments, as well as helping to maintain a healthy body weight, provide energy and support sleep and brain function. Family eating habits, food shopping, food prep and even family dinners offer an opportunity to build in healthy habits. 

Tips

  • Involve your child in food shopping and meal preparation
  • Starting a veggie or herb garden can be a great way to help children learn about where their food comes from, plus it always tastes better.
  • Eat regularly throughout the day. Not eating can cause the body stress
  • Choose less refined high sugar foods and drinks and more wholegrain cereals, fruit and vegetables
  • Eat a wide range variety of foods
  • Include oily fish (omega 3 fatty acids) in your diet. Omega 3 is a mood stabiliser. It is more beneficial to eat fish than take the fish oil tablets. 
  • Minimise saturated fats, trans-fats and refined sugars and fast food
  • Keep fluids up and drink water, avoid excessive caffeine by limiting soft-drink, coffee and energy drinks
  • Magnesium (found in green leafy vegetables) will help calm muscles.
  • Antioxidant water based foods like red berries can reduce acute pain.
  • If you are concerned about food intolerances discuss with your GP.
