The end of a Year

With Term 4 coming to an end and summer fast approaching I’m sure everyone will be ready for a break from the classroom. That being said, for some students who might be interested in squeezing in some extra learning and building up their resumes and employment skillsets, the summer weeks provide a good opportunity to do this. There are many skill set and industry short courses that are available to help students become work ready and get a head start in the industry they are passionate about. These courses and applications can be done individually but it is also possible to have trainers come in and run group sessions at the school, I encourage students to let me know if there is a particular training course they are interested in or if they are looking for further information.

White card (Construction Induction Training) – If you are seeking employment as a laborer in the construction industry in Australia having your white card is a requirement. As part of your white card certification you will learn about general safety requirements and legal requirements for workplace health and safety, you will be shown presentations and videos and will take part in some activities before you will have to complete an assessment to receive your white card. This is generally a course that takes place over a full day and must be completed face to face from a Registered Training Organization.

RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) – If you are seeking employment in the hospitality industry at a bar or café you will require an RSA certificate. This certificate states you have undergone training to serve alcohol responsibly. This course can be done over a full day and is offered online by some providers. It is important to check that your training provider is a Registered Training Organization. You are able to complete this training if you are under the age of 18 but will not be able to use the certificate until you are 18. In Victoria you will be required to take a refresher course after 3 years of attaining the certificate.

Barista Course – If you are interested in working at a café/restaurant and serving coffee taking a barista course could be very beneficial and will help boost your resume. These courses can be delivered over a day and will look at the skills and knowledge you need to create and serve espresso coffee beverages using commercial espresso machines.

WWC (Working With Children Check) – if you are seeking employment or volunteer work that involves working with children (babysitting, tutoring, working at a camp etc.) you will be required to get a Working With Children Check card. This is also a requirement for University degrees that lead to work with children (Nursing, Education etc.) This is not a course, it is an application that assesses your criminal record, professional conduct and identity. Applications can be completed through the Working With Children webpage.

First Aid – doing a general HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course is not only something that can help boost your resume and your employment skillset but it is also something that can prove to be very beneficial in all aspects of your day to day life. Through this course you will learn the skills and knowledge to provide first aid and manage an incident until qualified emergency help arrives. These courses can be offered in person or blended (online and face to face) and generally run over 2 days. The minimum age requirement is 14 years old.
