Linda Stanton's Weekly Update

Hello everyone,

I hope you have had a wonderful and productive week. For Mornington Secondary College, we welcome Nick Evans, our new Assistant Principal. Nick joins us with a wealth of experience in Senior school and will lead this area of the College, Years 10-12.

At the beginning of the year, I asked staff ‘what does Mornington Secondary College stand for? Are our values still relevant today as they were when they were identified four years ago?’ The answer was ‘yes’, our values of Respect, Achievement and Community were listed as the top three. The answer to ‘what does Mornington Secondary College stand for’ was one of high expectations. Our school is a school for all students where everyone can achieve success. The curriculum offers a breadth of subjects to have our students engaged in their learning. The many extracurricular activities offer so many opportunities for students to enjoy and feel connected.

This week, many of our senior students participated in interschool sport. Our Year 7 students learnt about Cyber Safety. Year 10 students put their skills to the test by enjoying ‘The Escape Room’ and Outdoor Education students went for a walk along the beach.

Next Thursday 23rd February, our Year 7 teachers will be in the Learning Centre meeting our Year 7 families. Afternoon tea will be provided from 4.30pm, with a small introduction beginning at 5pm. We hope to see you there.

Next Thursday, will also see many of our students in Year 9 and 10 participate in interschool sport.

Thank you for your support and feedback about my weekly newsletter. We will continue to STRIVE to be the best secondary college on the Mornington Peninsula.

Nick Evans

Assistant Principal Senior School

Hello, my name is Nick Evans and I’m really excited to be a part of the team with you at Mornington Secondary College. I have been a leading teacher for the last 5-6 years and was leading Personnel & Daily Operations at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College, having spent several years as the Senior School Leader at Gleneagles Secondary College. Additionally, I have been a time-tabler, daily org, domain leader (Health & PE), sport leader and classroom teacher (P.E. & HHD).

pmI’m really looking forward to working with the Mornington community and look forward to working with you all on maximising learning outcomes for our students. I’d like to thank Linda, Mike, Denise, Wendy and everyone else I’ve met so far, for being so friendly and welcoming. There is a great energy and feeling about Mornington and I’m looking forward to getting to know the Mornington way.

My experience over varied roles has strengthened my belief that as educators we have to take a holistic, strengths-based approach to improving student outcomes. Therefore, collaboration in the formation and continued focus on a consistent school-wide approach to teaching, learning and wellbeing is paramount in achieving those outcomes. I’ve been lucky to make significant contributions in teams who have implemented school-wide initiatives such as School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS), schoolwide instructional models and professional learning teams. The old African saying “If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together”, sums up my approach to improving practice.

When I’m away from school, I spend a lot of time on the golf course, trying valiantly to keep my handicap as low as I can. Once that fails, you’ll find me at the park or a beach with my dog, Bruce. I also spend as much time as I can watching the Tigers, or perhaps more aptly lately, watching replays of the Tigers from when we were good!

Staff Profiles

Emma Kirkos

Science & Mathematics Teacher

My name is Emma Kirkos. I am excited to teach Maths/Science at Mornington Secondary, after taking a break from teaching while raising my two young boys. Having grown up on the Peninsula, I am very happy to be living here again after spending about 10 years in Melbourne’s Northern suburbs. I look forward to getting to know the MSC community and being the best teacher I can be.

Liz Catford

English Teacher

I have spent the last 12 years teaching primary aged children and decided to made the leap to secondary teaching to explore my love of teaching English in a new environment. Some of my other interests include: performing in musical theatre, keeping fit and spending time with family.

Fiona James

Mathematics Teacher

I have taught for 25 years in four states of Australia and also overseas. I am both a primary and secondary trained teacher and have been a Mathematics specialist.  I was the numeracy tutor at MSC for 18 months prior to my permanent role.

I particularly enjoy teaching Years 7-9 and helping students transition from primary school mathematics to secondary school mathematics. This year I will be teaching Year 8, 9 and Year 11 VM. I look forward to getting to know the students better.
