This year Daphne G and Michael X, both Year 12 students, who represented Huntingtower in the Lions Youth of the Year competition. The Waverley region of the competition was held last Sunday, and the competition requires students to submit an application, attend an extended panel interview, and a public speaking portion, where students must speak on two impromptu topics with no warning or preparation time, and present a prepared speech on a topic of their choosing. The event aims at fostering leadership skills in Australian students through recognising the importance of qualities like contribution to the community and school, public speaking, academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement.

Congratulations to Daphne, who was both named the overall winner of the Waverley region and was the winner of the public speaking portion of the competition with a heartfelt and emotional speech on the importance of volunteering. She now progresses to represent our local region in the Zone finals of the competition, which will take place in two weeks’ time.

Well done to all the students involved, and to both Michael and Daphne on for both their excellent speeches and their outstanding representation of our school community.
