Year 8

Statistics

Data Collection

8C students are learning about the many concepts related to Statistics.

After reviewing the basics of statistics and learning some new language they were ready for their data collection.

This involved going outside where each group was responsible for collecting the data for the activity they chose.

All students participated in the activities, which were:

-time taken to run 100m

-kicking a football and measuring the length

-measuring each student’s height

- hair colour

-birthstones

-movie genres

A lot of fun was had by all.

Statistics

Data Collection

Year 8 Maths students are continuing to collect data to be able to answer the inquiry question ‘What Makes A Typical Year 8 Student?’ Here, students have been investigating how long a Year 8 student can stay in the position of  king in downball and their favourite AFL team.

Miss Strickland ran Javelin to find out the distance the typical Year 8 student can throw. Year 8O used the data to find the mean, median, mode, range and any outliers.  According to our sample, the average distance a Year 8 student can throw a javelin is 13.3m.

English

Three of our Year 8 English classes worked collaboratively to explore the short story, 'The Lost Thing'. They applied their understanding to create their own Lost Thing and begin planning a picture book.

Year 8 Rewards Excursion

Year 8 Albury Rewards Excursion

On Monday 11th November, 44 Year 8 students travelled to Albury to celebrate the end of Year 8 as an end-of-year “rewards” excursion.  The students started their day attending a workshop at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus. This comprised working with instructors in small groups through a series of hands-on activities such as baton-twirling, hula hoop work, trapeze, trampoline, tumbling and yoho-diabolo. It was a high-energy and highly engaging experience for everyone.

Some downtime for a Subway lunch at Noreuil Park by the Murray River was punctuated with some good old-fashioned playground fun, before heading off to the cinemas for the afternoon.

Contrary to popular belief (by some students), the movie Ride like a girl, the biopic of jockey Michelle Payne, was NOT a documentary…

The group had a great day out and were excellent ambassadors for our College. It was a sensational opportunity to celebrate the completion of Year 8 and enjoy building a sense of community.

Thank you to the staff - Ms Lauren Scott and Mrs Emma McCracken who, along with Mr Randall Jones, accompanied the students on the day.

Science with Mr Jones

Year 8R Science has been investigating the impact of oil spills as part of their study of natural resources and geology. They designed, tested and evaluated their oil containment booms with great success.

Maths

Year 8 Maths students completed a trivia quiz for their unit on ‘What Makes A Typical Year 8 Student.’ There were general knowledge questions, name the celebrity pictures, guess the teacher voice and more! Using their results, we worked together to construct a histogram both on paper and on EXCEL. Students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to represent their groups’ data in bar graphs and histograms.  Well-done to Bonnie in 8O and Tristen in 8B for scoring the highest marks for their classes.
