WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

SCSC Open Evening
A big thank you to everyone who came to our College Open Evening on Monday the 22nd March and of course all the work behind the scenes from our SCSC staff.
We loved showing our community the incredible facilities we have on-site, as well as providing fun activities for families to participate in.
If you were unable to come to our College Open Evening but are interested in a tour of our College, keep an eye our on our website for Term 2 tour dates.
Andy from Roseneath Creative and some of our awesome staff and students have also created a College Virtual Tour of some of the wonderful programs and subjects offered at SCSC.

Year 7 Science
STRIVE: Over term one in science, the year 7’s have been exploring our marine environment while learning about food webs, classification and ecosystems. This topic concluded with a fish dissection to explore the physical features of our local fish which help it to survive in it’s ecosystem. The year 7’s enjoyed the chance to don their lab coats and take part in this practical science activity and to apply the knowledge they have learnt over the course of the term.
Zebe H of 7B sums up her experience with the fish dissection:
"When we were dissecting the fish, our group had the Garfish and it was fun and interesting experience. First we had to open the jaw and observe the teeth. The Garfish had very small teeth that were hard to see. Next we had to observe it’s gills. After that we stuck the point of the scissors into the fish’s vent and cut along it’s stomach about to where the gills were. We were meant to pull out the heart and digestive tract. We needed some help from the teacher to start us off and we saw some pictures of a dissection on a blue mackerel to help us as well. It was very interesting."
Year 7 Art
FLOURISH: Our students in 7G have created some lovely pear still life drawings. They are studying tone and the medium they used is chalk pastels. We love how wonderfully vibrant they are.
Ninja Day - Year 8 Wellbeing
UNITE: The Year 8 Wellbeing day was celebrated on Tuesday 22 March with great excitement and enthusiasm from the students and teachers involved.
A Ninja Course was set up in the gym, with a large obstacle course and equipment that was to encourage students to show grit and determination and to just simply have a go! Students and teachers were put through the ropes, jumped over obstacles and scrambled under nets and then had to take the almighty leap up the big inflatable ramp and slide to finally make it to the finish in the quickest time.
Clearly our students enjoyed the activity - giving each student the opportunity of beating not only each other’s scores but also the teachers and the 'main-man' Leyton from the Ninja course himself. Best time was just under the 12 second mark. Well done to all that gave it a go!
We also had Leigh from Batforce who spoke about creating a safe, respectful and healthy relationship from our digital use. She explored the notion that patterns matter… that we develop our patterns now with our digital use that will take us into our adult lives, as well as explored consent, sexting and the notion of the Doubt Club. Leigh challenged our students to really think about what they see on the screen – just because you see it doesn’t necessarily make it real!
Also, our School Health Promotion Nurse Mel explored with the students regarding stress and the relationship we have with stress as we move through our school journey. Mel encouraged the students to think about what causes them to feel stressed at different times and what strategies they can use to try and relieve some of the stresses.
Utilising the analogy of the stress bucket, their teachers also joined in the activity to show students that even as adults we can also feel stress and were reminded that some stress can actually be healthy – it can motivate and encourage us to do our best. The students also made stress balls out of balloons and sand.
To sum up the day, a comment from one young person after completing the Ninja course – “I came today not knowing if I would like today, I did everything and I conquered everything… it was a good school day"
Year 9 Girl in Charge
STRIVE: The Year 9 Girl in Charge Program was lucky enough to have former Australian Netballer Tegan Philip facilitate the session in the stadium today. The session included a presentation that focussed on opportunities and setbacks.
Tegan is a Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and multiple Premiership player with the Melbourne
Vixens. A big thank you to Tegan for coming out to the College and speaking with our students!

Year 10 Fashion Design
STRIVE: It has been a busy term in the Textiles department and the Year 10 students have been busy producing their first production CAT. A jumper. Students design and sew their own. It has been amazing to have a full term back at the school and being able to get production CATs completed this year. We have a wonderful new textiles room that makes so much room for students to get their ‘creative’ on. We have a new Cricut machine and puff screen printing paint to be able to put different technological prints on the jumpers.
Check out their fabulous designs!
VCAL: Art of Minds
RESPECT: A big thank you to Jules Haddock from Art of the Minds who came to visit out VCAL program the other week as part of the Schools in Philanthropy program.
It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about a local community organisation that aims to destigmatise mental illness and proactively promote mental wellbeing.
National Ride to School Day
RESPECT: National Ride2School Day was on Friday 25th March and is Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel. It is a day full of fun and colour where students, teachers and parents discover the joy of riding and kick-start healthy habits for the future. As you can see above, we had a lot of students ride to school on this day!
Breakfast Club
We have a Breakfast Club every Friday morning at 8:15 - 8:45 and is run by our Wellbeing and VCAL teams. We include toast and a hot milo for students to enjoy and set them up for the day. This is a wonderful program and we thank our SCSC staff for all their help and support.
Introducing our new Mental Health Practitioner
"My name is Rachel Galliker and I am the new Mental Health Practitioner at Surf Coast Secondary College. I will be here every Wednesday and Thursday to provide counselling and short term intervention support to students with mild to moderate mental health needs.
I am a qualified Social Worker and have worked in both hospital and outpatient settings with different age groups. The last 10 years I have worked as a mental health clinician for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service undertaking mental health assessments and providing therapy and case management to children and adolescents with complex mental health difficulties.
I thoroughly enjoy working with young people and look forward to using my skills to help students within the school who are in need of mental health support."
