Wellbeing

All students attending St Louis de Montfort's Aspendale have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is a fundamental responsibility of all within our school.

Social Relationships at School

Having had two disruptive years of attendance at school some children have missed some important elements of social interaction.  Social interactions in childhood help us to develop our interpersonal skills. Children learn cooperation, friendship, and respect for others. Through social play children learn to work on problem solving together and develop an understanding of the social world by seeing themselves in relation to home, family, culture, school, and community.

As we work to help students fit back into the social schema of school, a problem-solving approach is taken when helping children learn how to resolve conflicts. We aim to help students see appropriate social responses on the yard and in the classroom when problems arise.  Children learn through making mistakes. Through experiencing different social situations they learn the cognitive skills of taking another’s perspective, thinking in terms of multiple contributing factors and anticipating the consequences of their actions.

If your child is experiencing challenges with social interactions you can help them at home by:

  • Listening with empathy for the feelings of your child - that sounds hard, I can see that upsets you.
  • Helping them to identify things that exacerbate the situation, and plan strategies to resolve them - what other things could we do, what do you think would help?
  • Supporting them to work on positive communication and conflict resolution skills. - How could you talk to the other person about this? Who could you ask for help from at school?

Below is a great article around ways you can help your child to resolve conflicts.  If there is anything that you are concerned about with your child and their social relationships reach out to your child's teacher.

Home made earrings for St Kilda mums

Hi we are Bridget and Zara and we are the founders of the smiley dot jewellery makers. We are raising money for the St Kilda mum's.  $2 from every pair of earrings go to the charity - we know how hard it has been through COVID for all parents and we are donating money to do our part in helping our fantastic mums.  We will be selling our earring at school from next week with each pair selling for $5.
