Learning and Teaching

NAPLAN commences on Tuesday

This week NAPLAN commences on Tuesday for our Year 3 and 5 students. This will run over a two week period and the timetable is shown below. We encourage our students to do the best they can do and remember it is only a moment in time.

Home Reading

This term we would like to encourage all our students to participate regularly in reading at home and we would appreciate your support. The Premier's Reading Challenge is the perfect opportunity to explore great literature and to make a regular habit of reading good books.  Please see the Library News for information about how to join the challenge.

Regular home reading practice is a part of homework across the school at St Louis, and importantly, it is a key contributor to reading development.

In the junior grades when students are learning to read, we send home levelled readers that provide opportunities to practice the skills we teach at school. We ask families to record their child’s reading in the Reading Diary and to encourage a love of reading. You are welcome to engage in reading of all kinds - picture books, novels, recipes, newspaper articles, comic books - the more reading the better!

As children begin to read independently, families are less likely to hear their child read or to read together.  It is still important to engage with your child about their reading and to discuss what they have read, even if they can decode the words without support.  Asking what the book is about or discussing your child's favourite part is a great conversation starter and will help you to ascertain if your child is comprehending what they read. You can also hear a page or two, or take turns reading and enjoy the book together.

It helps to explore books that your child is interested in, particularly if they are a reluctant reader.  There are so many genres and themes available now that there is something for everyone! The Premier's Reading Challenge book list would be a valuable resource to explore new reading ideas or chat to your child's teacher.
