Welcome back to yet another busy term. This semester, all students in Years 8-11 will be participating in mid semester examinations between the 28th of May and the 5th of June. Whilst our Year 8 and 9 students only have exams in English and Mathematics, they are still vital in the development of students and their self-efficacy regarding high stakes assessment. Our Year 10 and 11 students will have exams in all their subjects and this will be instrumental in assisting students to develop examination skills, time management skills and in helping students develop strategies for reducing their anxiety regarding exam assessments in their senior studies.

Research has found there are many proactive things students can do to minimise their stress. Dr Michael Carr Gregg, a leading adolescent psychologist, argues that sleep and sleep routines are vital in combating stress. He argues that teenagers need “between 8.25 and 9.25 hours of sleep every night for their brain to function optimally the next day”. Sleep is a habit and as such students should be making a concerted effort to prepare themselves for sleep by dimming lights 30 minutes before they intend to sleep, turning off devices and avoiding stimulants like caffeine and energy drinks after noon. Students are also reminded to drink water to ensure their brains are hydrated as this improves the function of the brain. Families can assist students in their preparation by ensuring there are good routines which allow students to take breaks from study and allocate time for exercise to assist students in achieving the elusive balance between study and stress.
