An insight into Star of the Sea College

2020 College Theme – Justice – growing faith into action
When first told that the theme for the 2020 school year was to be centred around justice, we were beyond excited. Passionate about a myriad of matters within not only our school, but our local, national and global community, we have aimed to foster a sense of justice within all students through our theme ‘Justice – growing faith into action’.
In launching our theme, we hope to have ignited a desire within students to look beyond our local community towards our increasingly globalised world in order to source inspiration for how they may affect change within our school. Promoting compassion, peace and justice, we have encouraged students to see these principles as not only reflected in our faith as a Presentation College, but also in the actions of global leaders, such as Jacinda Ardern, and leading organisations such as the United Nations. In doing so, we hope to have inspired students to take action within our school community, to make a difference, particularly during the challenging times that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented.
In our leadership this year, we invite others, on issues they are passionate about, to lead beside us. To step up, to stand for justice, and grow their faith into action. As the bushfires ravaged much of Australia at the beginning of the year, we were uplifted by the activities of many students within the Star community, who either donated their own funds, or encouraged awareness and action from those around them. It reminded us of the tremendous Star spirit that lives within all students, and an evident desire to help those less fortunate in the community. In more recent times, we have looked towards Nano Nagle for inspiration, who acted to help those in the community who were especially isolated. As we venture through such unprecedented times, we have reminded students to follow in her footsteps, reaching out to those who may be particularly vulnerable. Whether this be through reaching out to elderly neighbours by delivering meals or supporting local non-profit organisations, no action is too small.
Broadly, our 2020 College theme – 'Justice – growing faith into action' has invited students to look beyond, and consider how their actions, regardless of size, can impact those around them in positive ways.
Face Masks for COVID 19
Since returning to school in Term 3, our Senior Fay House and VCAL students have been busy making asks and VCAL students with their latest enterprise: making and selling face masks for members of our community, with all proceeds being donated to Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project. Demand is high and the gorgeous masks are selling fast. We are very proud of our students and their generosity as they share their skills to keep us safe, to bring a little colour to our community and to support BASP clients during this most challenging time.
A look at the Board of Star of the Sea College
At Star we have recently experienced "Board renewal" as some of our valued Directors came to the end of several terms, and we recruited from across our community. Our strategic focus for the next 5 years is on execution of a significant building program, updating facilities for the next generation of Star students, and we have added some deep experience in risk management, legal and education to our Board. While progressing our building projects, we have lately been managing risks and implications of COVID-19, supporting the College leadership to deliver excellent online learning, as well as managing a return to campus that is safe and fulfilling. We expect to remain focused on ensuring access to education for students with diverse backgrounds and means, as the economic pressures post COVID may impact those in our community.
