Technology – Foods and Textiles

All students continue to be learning, and creating incredible products in Foods and Textiles.

Year 7 Technology – Foods

The Year 7 students have continued to refine their knife skills through the preparation of Chicken and Vegetable Stir Fry and Chow Mein. They have been learning how to use a wok and adjust the flavours to balance their final product. Last week students learnt how to make a Roux, a combination of flour and fat which is commonly used to thicken sauces. Students used this to produce their Macaroni Cheese served with a fresh garden salad. Last week students also learnt about how to reduce waste in the kitchen by making Kimchi with the left over wombok cabbage. The Year 7s are working so positively and productively during their Food Technology lessons and present their food with care and attention to detail. Keep up this amazing effort Year 7s!

Marcus said he enjoyed making French Toast and said it was really good!

Amelia commented that she has enjoyed making food that she hasn’t made before, and using a wok.

Maizy stated she liked using the woks as it helped her to understand how other cultures cooked their food.

Year 9/10 Café Culture

As students develop their knowledge and understanding of different menu items served at a café, they have continued to produce incredible products. They have served Devonshire Tea, Café style muffins and a Club Sandwich. Such a delightful group of students who are showing such growth in their learning!

Year 5/6 Technology – Foods

Over the last few weeks students have enjoyed using the stove top to create a range of dishes. It has been wonderful to see their confidence, and of course being very safe when using the stove top. Students have made pizza, Quesadillas and Napoli sauce served with pasta. Please enjoy reading the student reflections on their recent paddock to plate experience at Edenhope College.

"We started by planting the tomatoes. We watered them every agriculture lesson. They took roughly two weeks to grow. Then the class picked the tomatoes and gave them to miss Hawkins. 1 week later in cooking we made pasta sauce using the tomatoes from the garden. We started by adding onion and garlic into a pan and stirred till golden brown. Then add in diced tomatoes from the garden and 1 cup of water into the pot I added basil pepper and a pinch of salt. Then we left it to simmer and stirred occasionally. The final product came out great, but it was a bit watery and needed more salt. Overall I enjoyed making pasta." - Bailey O

"On Wednesday we had food and we made pasta sauce. We planted the tomatoes and we watered them and made sure that there was a lot of sun. Then, once they were grown, we picked them and we used the tomatoes in our sauce. We cut them up first, we also put in some onions, 1 cup of water and some herbs. We put our pasta sauce onto the pasta and put some cheese on top and ate it. It was yum!" – Adelle

"So first we picked the tomatoes from the wicking bed then we washed them then chopped them up, cooked them and put it in the pasta and it was so goooooood." – Finn

"In cooking, we made pasta sauce. It had tomatoes, and onions in it. We really wanted to make the pasta as well. But that was left to the teachers. What was the hardest bit? Probably, cutting the tomatoes, and onions in, it started to bubble up. After that we put some basil, and onions in it. Then we put two scoops of sugar in. When it was done, we grabbed some bowls, and put the pasta and sauce, in the bowl. Then we presented it, and then ate it. I loved that lesson!" – Bridie

Year 2/3/4 Technology – Textiles

The Year 2/3/4 students have been improving their skills in creating a design and stitching this onto plastic embroidery mesh. Students have continued making decisions on the type and colour wool they want to use, and choosing their stitches they could use to sew their design. The students creativity has been amazing to watch! Students are looking forward to completing their textile products.

Agriculture Report

Thank you very much to Jeff and Jess Sambell for supplying us with some fantastic sheep manure for our wicking beds to help nourish our next batch of vegetables.  They also supplied us with a variety of different seedlings, which the Year 5/6 and 2/3/4 classes had a lovely time planting on Thursday and Friday.

Thanks also to Rosey Leeming for supplying us with our tomato plants, which are fruiting really well. (even after the students’ “help” themselves to a quick snack)

We are looking forward to some tasty homemade relish from the Cooking classes.
